I've got an old bike with a shimano SIS derailer and 6 speed SIS freewheel. I wanted to migrate from down tube to bar end shifters, using the adapters from rivendell, but the shimano down tube shifters dont work, so I picked up a pair of sunrace 6 speed indexed downtube shifters. Now I've been reading a bit online about these and it seems like the indexing should match up, but in practice, it's not so well. seems like if I adjust it so it's not jumping out of the low gears its not shifting right on the high gears.

has anybody worked with these? are they compatible, or am i just banging my head against a wall trying to adjust them right? alternately, does anyone know where to find shimano compatible 6-speed indexed bar end shifters?

1) Is the derailleur bent at all? This can make a big difference in shifting, especially considering the problems you describe.
2) As far as I know Sunrace is compatible with Shimano.
3) I've never seen a Shimano-compatible 6-speed bar end shifter. I've seen Suntour indexed 6-speed, but that won't work. Why not go with the old Suntour bar end friction shifters, or are you set on indexing?

as far as I can tell the derailer is not bent.

If there are suntour indexed 6-speed shifters, I would consider switching to a suntour freewheel (and derailer if necessary). do you know where to find these shifters? I am pretty set on indexing. I've tried friction shifting and it just doesn't do it for me.
