Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Bicycle speed record (http://www.bentrideronline.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=153&blogId=1)
Sam Wittingham has raised the human powered vehicle one-hour record to almost 54 miles.
Really, now, who needs a car for commuting when a bike goes 54 miles in an hour. ;)
Of course, such a performance would be impossible in regular commuting conditions, but still.

Yes, up a whopping half a mph from the last record. :p In order to have such performance under regular conditions we would need a slightly wider, more comfortable velo, and use 2-3 lead acid batts in addition to the power from the rider. Or just velo-pool, but you car-free types seem too exclusive for co-operation and what-not. ;)

I wouldn't like such a bike. You get there too fast. I'm mostly out there to enjoy the ride. Arriving at the destination seems like a secondary thing.

You're forgetting the many posts in this forum describing how bikes are faster than cars in door-to-door performance even though they might achieve a lower maximum speed during the trip.
