My rebuild is now officially in progress, and I will post pics along the way. Initially I had thought of going with a theme that is more modern and very conservative in style. But then, I decided on goin' retro. It is to be painted flourescent green and pink, with new decals throughout.
Here's a pic of the original bike when my friend gave it to me in its less than rideable condition. It's an old Specialized Rockhopper Comp with a set of Manitou Spyder forks.
I think it's a 2001 model.

Here's a link to repair work I did and posted in the Framebuilders forum, for those interested.

Now that the repair is complete, the paint job and rebuild can begin. I figured, I might as well give it the really obnoxious paint job I was thinking about doing. I want it to really stand out. Here's my current progress with the first couple of light coats. The green and pink will be fuller, slightly darker, and much brighter when finished. The paint is nothing short of blinding. Really sharp.

If you think this is interesting, you should see the modern LX gruppo, along with retro hardware that's going on this thing. It's gonna be a real oddball. :D

do you think you could PM me with a website or some instructions or something on how to completely redo a frame?
i've got an old frame that i've been running single speed on and want to strip it down and do a similar project as yours... paint!
its just have no clue to start, clueless from type of paint, to how to tape up the frame.
thx.
I figured, I might as well give it the really obnoxious paint job
+1 on obnoxious:D
It reminds me of vintage Fisher stuff for some odd reason. It's still fun and if you have a palet for it...more power to ya.
I'd love to do a retro job...hmm...Pauls...Kooka...CookBros...biopace...spin mags...or even worse, those wind discs...specialized UmmaGumma tires...Kore stem...King headset, wait a minute...King has been producing excellence for as long as I can remember.:)
I wouldn't mind doing a Girvin/Noleen fork though instead of an old school slider...replace the shock with an RP23

Well, it's not going to be totally retro. Mainly the shifters and ders will all be modern, but the bar/stem, seatpost, various nuts and bolts, etc, will be retro back to the mid 90's. If you consider that retro. It is certainly not the most common today.

Well, just a little update on current progress. The main colors are done, with a little bit of touch up on the way. Try as I may, green and pink do not transition very well at all. You end up with a band of brown, for those of you who have done any painting. So, I'm thinking I will do some hot purple over the transition points to help the frame blend in witrh the purple hardware I'm installing.
I also adhered a new set of flourescent green Manitou decals on the forks.

The question is. Should I fade/airbrush in a band of purple to transition the pink and green, or should I tape it with sharp lines?
I'd do an airbrush fade - -longer (3"?) on the top/bottom surfaces of the tubes (like a highlight) and narrower (1"?) on the sides. But I think I'd do yellow instead of purple. Purple is still going to give you a brownish tint at the overlap of the green. Yellow will give you a cleaner blend.

another way you could have done a cleaner transition without the blending of colors is to find any kind of material with small holes and use to mask it off, to get a sort of screen print effect, the colors will be more discrete yet still get the fade effect w/o as much of the browning. Alot of stuff in the 90s did this for that very reason,
need some hammer pants to go with that bike.
Did you rough-up the old paint before spraying over?
Patriot

Yes, I roughed it with 600gr. I messed with a real thin strip of fade to see what it would look like, and it was also brown. I didn't like it. Then I thought, "You know, I could try something differant. How about a compromise between a fade and some taping?" :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g280/Patriot1970/DSC00982.jpg
Now, what do ya think? :)
I know, I know, it's VERY differant. :o
All I need now, is the new decals for the tubing.
That's a nice effect. Now how 'bout masking the other way and fogging in an ultramarine blue on the green side?
Y'know, in looking at this again, it occurs to me that you could do the upper half of the tubes flour. pink and the undersides green - -then it would look sorta "half-ripe." :D

Well boys and girls...
The Purple is on the way. I've been getting numerous boxes in the mail, with all kinds of goodies. I got a really good deal from a guy on Ebay who sells alot of the retro purple ano bits. The prices are all higher, but I emailed him and asked if he would match prices of other sellers and give any discounts if I bought a whole bunch of stuff. He said, "Tell me everything you want, and make me an offer." So, I found all the stuff I wanted, and told him what I was willing to pay. I offered a fair price, but still at a hefty discount. He shipped everything out that day. It's all old retro stuff anyway, so he obviously still made a profit. :D
The first here, is one that took a bit of work. It's the stock crank that came with my Rockhopper. The aluminum cranks were pretty badly nicked and scratched. So, I sanded it as smooth as I could with 400gr., then bead blasted the cranks in my garage with a touch-up glass bead gun at 90psi. It turned out pretty nice. Almost like new, but with a nice satin alloy finish.
I also got two new rings off ebay, along with some purple alloy chainring bolts, and new M8 crank bolts with purple alloy dust covers. My total invested to restore the crank is as follows...
XT 44t outer ring- $17.
Race Face 32t middle ring- $18.
Stock steel 20t inner ring- $0
Purple bolts- $11 for all.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g280/Patriot1970/DSC00998.jpg
The next is a little more purple. It's a new M580 LX rear der. I couldn't help myself. I like the new jockey pulleys alot better, because they have real sealed bearings, not the cheap bushings with dust covers.

P.S. Even more purple stuff on the way. :D

Can someone give me more links to threads wheer ppl pimp there bikes...I am currently in the process of pimping a bike. ? For the thread starter, what steps did you take in spraying ? Did you have to sand at all ?
Patriot
06-06-07, 03:21 AM
No, I didn't really need to sand it. It was already prepped after chemically stripping it. All I did was remove the original paint with a stripper, and sprayed it clean with a garden hose. The alloy underneath was plenty rough to reprime. I did a little sanding to remove a couple spots of leftover paint, but nothing major. After priming, I then used my airbrush to paint the bike, and used two part clear coat to finish it off.
I still have to apply new decals and add more coats of clear to seal everything up. That will come soon, when I can get my air compressor fixed.
Darn thing overheated on me.
This is looking like a real fun project. Hate to say it, I like building them more than riding them. :D

Damn Patriot. That sure is unique! This certainly harkens back to the days of yore. Anyway, as soon as I saw the request for purple wheels I thought of these:
http://a248.e.akamai.net/f/248/5462/2h/oddsandendos.safeshopper.com/images/b71anxwo.jpg
Unfortunately, they seem to be disk specific. :(
They seem to make them by misting red and blue on the wheels. Up close, you can actually see the dots. About 2-3 feet back they give the purple look. Of course, since you're so handy with a paint gun anyway, couldn't you do this?
OH SNAP!!!
I knew I forgot something. :(
hmmm.... I wonder if anyone makes a 400g purple anodized MTB rim?
Well, at the very least you need purple nipples!
Very cool. I always lusted after ano stuff as a kid and still think it looks cool. I'm ano blue-ing up a rigid mtb of my own right now. That crankset looks awesome.
I remember so wanting a Mat Titanium Merlin with Purple ano parts back in the 80's
Looks like a fun project!
