General Cycling Discussion - good wheel set?

im looking to buy a new wheel set and i would like to spend less than 200 bucks. Im looking for double walled for my city commute and ive heard bad things about Alexrims, dont know anything about vuelta, and have been looking at a fsa set that looks reasonable. Im just not knowledgeable enough to make a proper decision in my price range. any help would be great.

Can you build your own wheels? If so, you can save yourself lots of money. If not, buy a wheel that's already built. For a $200 price range, you can get a set of Open Pro's for about $210. Nice and sturdy. I ride on Alexrims (Alxrims 500's) and I've dogged on them before, but honestly, I'm trying to beat the crap out of them but they hold up pretty well.... just heavy and don't really flow with my bike. Mavic Open Pro's buddy... search Th33 int3l2n3tz for good deals.

Can't really compare prices but 105 hubs- 36 double butted spokes on Mavic cxp33 rims. A good set of wheels and cost £105- or $210 if you convert. Prices may be different over there but Look and you will find.

Just to add to this. It's typically cheaper to buy a whole new wheel than buy just a rim and swap over. Labor is around $60 per wheel build. Rims start around $50.

You are so right. I ride an MTB aswell and with V brakes I knock the rims out in about 18 months. Two new rims- new spokes and labour work out at $50 more than buying new wheels. The only wheels I would change the rims on are on the Offroad Tandem. Hope Big un hubs are worth rebuilding as a new set of wheels costa about $800. Rerimming both wheels will only cost around $300

Now on the MTB- XT hubs and Mavic XC 717 rims. By the time I am getting to replacement wheel time- the hubs are normally on the way out aswell. So I order the new wheels and have a spare set of wheels for the Mud rides or passing onto friends for a small fee.

Probably not a way to save money. I build all my own wheels and can buy bike parts for bike shop wholesale. Guess what. The cheapest way for me to buy the components necessary to build a pair of Ultegra/Open Pros is to buy a MO or internet prebuilt wheelset and take it apart.
