Speaking of eating...

This is my first century, what do you experienced people recommend in regards to eating the night before, morning of, and during the ride???

eat what you normally eat. The important thing is to eat and drink during the ride. Eat at every rest stop, pace yourself and drink plenty. No problem.

Don't start using energy gels or such stuff if your stomach is not used to it.

Looks like Western Wheelers are doing Pescadero and Tunitas Creek. Gonna be lots of cyclists out there this weekend ...

I know ... We'll just get together on Saturday morning ...

I've enjoyed hanging out with friends the day before the big ride. If it can still happen, great. If not, no problem. It's always good to get some sleep the day before the ride, and I'll understand if some cannot make it.

I think they are starting 3 hours later than you folks and doing a longer ride (Haskins and Stage) before they get to Tunitas. You'll have to be going really slow to get dropped by them.

+2.
Also, drink plenty of water (kind of over-hydrate) the day before.

Well, I guess schedule is a little tight for a pre-ride dinner, so I'll just meet everyone at the start.

My plan is to leave that start by 6:30 am. For those of us starting that early, hopefully we can get a group picture together? See ya there.

I'll be there at 6:30. Meet you by the registration area?

Speaking of eating...

This is my first century, what do you experienced people recommend in regards to eating the night before, morning of, and during the ride???

Before and morning of ride, I would suggest not eating anything that might give you stomache troubles. In high school, I never thought of bringing my own lunch the day of the track meet, and of course, we would have greasy tacos at the cafeteria that day. So forgo anything too greasy or spicy, and don't get smashed.

On the day of the ride, I would bring some energy gels. If you're lagging between rest stops, they provide a quick pick me up. There are some gels with caffeine if you're into that. At the later rest stops, in addition to the fruit and fluid replacement, I like having the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches since the fat and protein from the peanut butter is a nice break and supplement to all the carbs I've been ingesting.

Also, don't forget to drink, and mix a carb/electrolyte drink for your water bottles that's been known not to make you sick.

I'll probably be there a little before that, but let's meet by registration area. I'm not decided yet ... I might wear the SoCal Bike Forums jersey, so it will be easy to spot me. I'll let everyone know by Friday.

One of these days I'll get to ride with you people. Going camping at Lake Isabella over the weekend otherwise I'd be all over the Giro.

Does anybody know if they provide any sports drinks at rest stops and what brand?

For new riders, it's good to experiment with breakfasts before morning training rides to see what works for you. I swear by oatmeal, GrapeNuts aren't too bad either. Lots of people have bagels before rides but I found they didn't work for me even though I love bagels (I feel more sluggish than after a bowl of oatmeal).

johnny99

The time to experiment with dinners and breakfasts is a month or more before the ride, not the days before the ride. Just eat what you normally eat before a longer ride. During the ride, eat enough to keep you going, but don't eat anything too much different from what you normally eat. Starchy food like bread and potatoes is usually easier on your stomach than fatty or sugary foods.

Most century rides supply Gatorade (made from powder) at the rest stops. If you prefer something else, then bring some powder in a plastic bag and mix your own sport drink.

Remember that it can be cool and cloudy out along the coast. A brightly colored wind vest or jacket is a good idea. Blinking tail lights is also a good idea.

Could someone give me a ride from Santa Clara? I've crossed Skyline once before, and it was terrible, but I think I can handle this now.
Anyone? I'll throw in for gas and I don't need a ride back.

I'm pretty much in, but if I can get a ride, I can wake up at 530 instead of 4.

Say hi if you see a red lawyer jersey riding a red hybrid.

I'm up for it. Asia (NYGirl) is definitely doing Outback, so I imagine that's what I'll end up going for ... it's the Outback in Cupertino, across from the Apple campus. Don't know how packed it will be though.

But only the 70k, so I'll probably miss everyone here, as I don't think the rest of my group will want to be up that early. Have a good time you guys! Maybe I'll see some of you back at the bay meadows later in the day.

Yay that was good fun. Nice to meet and ride with you guys, esp Ron Asia and Laura for the great company up to the top of Tunitas.

I ended up taking a shortcut after the kings mtn descent. I just headed back up Canada and to the end. It still ended up being a respectable 70 mile ride . That whole leg after we passed Old La Honda on the 84 descent was new to me and a truly beautiful ride.

Unfortunatley, bossman I didn't meet any of you on the 100k. It was truly a beautiful day to ride and what about those rest stops? Loved the potatoes. :D Anyways, maybe next time we can meet somewhere at a specific time before the routes to get aquainted.
