the popularity of the fixie is one of the reasons my latest bike is going to be a touring bike (the other, that i want to do some fully loaded touring, doesn't hurt.)

but really.. gears are confusing!

One of the things the article kind of left out is that many of the bikes we now assume are fixies are really "just" single speeds

that, and fixies aren't always brakeless.

That is unfortunately one of the most ignorant articles I've ever read about anything cycling related.

The person who said this....:

". . . People are intimidated by bikes with 27 gears," he said. "They're worried about things breaking and fixing flats..."

... should be beaten to death with shifting cable wrapped around an 11-23 cassette.

and how many times are they going to say fixies are "brakeless"... and how completely untrue that statement is. If you can stop by any means at all, then you have brakes. A foot on the tire is a brake. I guess ignorance truely is bliss... arrrgghhhhh :)
