View Full Version : Where should The Cypress live?

Cypress

I woke up to 2 inches of snow this morning. I'm sick of snow. Bozeman has 9 months of winter, and being a cyclist is tough. If a cyclist doesn't ski, he/she loses fitness over the winter. Every time I go down a hill on a pair of ski's I look more like a breakdancer OD'ing on cocaine and redbull than a skier. Same holds true for snowboarding, only my wrists and neck come out in worse shape.

This is coupled with another issue: The Woman.

She is moving back in with her parents 350 miles in Kalispell because they are buying her a business. She has no intention of moving back here. I hate Kalispell. Ever since I've been with her (6.5 years) I have told her that I will never live in Kalispell as long as I am on this earth. Of recent, I have also been telling her that if I ever move, it will be out of this rotten cold state to somewhere more "outdoor friendly". Adding to the heap is the fact that her parents HATE me. Like, full on, no holds barred, hate.

She leaves next week with the full knowledge that I would rather move to the slums of Honduras than Kalispell. The main reason I haven't moved out of state yet was due to her. I would have left LONG ago if I had known she would "abandon" me like this.

Is this a hint?

I would say Northern Italy, but Colorado is the next best thing.

Colorado, or somewhere in the Smokey Mountains. Go to Costa Rica and ride with CRTreeDude.

Oh, it's a sign all right. Move to Oregon. We like bikes here. And skiing, snowboarding, hiking, camping, hunting, boating, etc., etc. The winters are mild. You can bike year round except for about 2 weeks. Sorry about your girlfriend, though. That's rough.

I dont know D. but to me it kind of is an hint, I mean she is planning her future, going somewhere where she will have her own business and it sort of doesnt include you to an extent if you made clear that you would never go, she is also doing something her parents are approving ( see doing for her via buying the business for her) and they sadly dont approve of you, so going with what "they" want, doesnt included you sorta. I dont know, if you have been with her this long, wouldnt she want to make sure you'll go with her?
is she including you? is she asking you to go with her?

Cypress - added the Carolinas (all in one option) to your poll for you. I voted Austin though.

Cypress, Come to Middle Tennessee baby, we got lots of hills for you with mild winters. We would love to have you here.

Yeah, I love Montana. To visit. Not sure I want to live there either. I remember one August trip fishing on the Big Hole River in a snowstorm. Wisdom is a cold place. I've been to Kalispell several times. Flew into the BOB from there. Tourist town. Grey all winter. My friends live in Whitehall, work in Butte.

The SE, at least up in the hills, has great weather. It is starting to get crowded though with retirees. Those people just seem to get in the way. They don't have much to do so they just drive around.

I guess it depends on how you make a living, the need for a job or school etc. For me SoCal is too expensive and overpopulated. Colorado is nice to visit but again winter is an issue. Denver had a hard one this year. Couldn't live on the front range. Too big of a megalopolis. Fun to visit the mountains though.

Austin might be cool. Never have been there but it seems like an island in an otherwise hot desolate State.

Good luck with the whole gf moving thing.

Austin is cool too, but that would put you within hours of me. I have no problems with you it is RyanF and all the other stalkers that you will bring with you that scare me. So I have to say Carolinas or Colorado.

Hi Cypress, come on down. There are lots of Ticas who would be more than happy to take you home to the parents - and the parents might actually like you. And you could go from 9 months of winter to NO WINTER - never in recorded history a winter - and how about cagers who are careful not to run you over.

Wouldn't Colorado Springs be a little close to the fam you were flown out to see recently?

I'd vote for Austin, but I'm from Texas, and you'd be missing the mountains. Everywhere else on the list looks great.

Just don't, for the love of all that is holy to cyclists, move to Toronto.

Living in a place where you can ride year round is the way to go. I'd vote somewhere warmer with hills: Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, North Georgia, Texas, Arizona, California (if you are desparate).

This past winter was a bit unusual, but we didn't have 2 inches of snow the entire season. :)

WOW, 6.5 years together OMG!! And I'm crying over here. YIKES I feel bad now. Sorry. :(

I say Colorado, but thats cause I'm bias though. I just LOVE LOVE this state.

I tell everyone to move here. :)

I appreciate all of the suggestions. I might roll it around for a while before taking off to anywhere. Her leaving me is stressful enough. Throw moving into the equation and I just may implode. The sight of an imploding human frightens and confuses me.

+1-quadrillion. I LOVE it here! I moved to NC from Reno 11 years ago and still think it is the most beautiful state I've ever lived in. Excellent cycling, mild winters, lots of outdoor activity, decent cost of living, and cool people (like me :D ).

Sorry to hear about you and The Woman, not an easy time to get through.

N. Carolina, but that will put you at many of the races I will be entering. I'm not sure I like that idea, but I'm only a 5 so I won't have to worry about you for a while.

Cypress, you should take a look at Madison, Wisconsin. Yeah, they have winters, but they end well before Montana's.

Great cycling town. Great university town.

Well Cypress, you might want to wait for the current stress to blow over, or you might just decide to get it all over at once. You are young, you can take it. Looking at your Avatar, you aren't that mellow anyway...

Come to Austin dude. Steep @ss hills and lower humidity and less rain than the Carolinas. Cost of living is much more reasonable than SoCal (which is where I'd go in a heartbeat if money were no object). EDR could probably get you on his team too if you're interested.

What's wrong with Kalispell that you'd rather be dead than live there? I just heard of the place by reading this thread, but how bad could it be? Of course it's biased, but its website makes it look like a nice enough small town (the header image has a picture of a person on a bike! :)). Unless it's a hotbed of Scientology (L. Ron Hubbard grew up there, according to Wikipedia), or her parents are powerful politicians there...

You could always move to Sri Lanka, though. Go on rides with Arthur C. Clarke. Or at least ride to/around his house.

Kalispell is a crap town. Drama central, and yeah, her parents are high and mighty within the community.

I'd have to vote NC. And, no, I'm not demanding that you move here.

We have beautiful mountains for you to ride in (check out BikeWNC's ride reports), beautiful beaches, rolling hills, and flats. Four distinct seasons, very little snow (mostly ice). Lots of good roads for training. Lots of racing. Lots of BF'ers. And a great TT series. :D Pretty decent job market, too, depending on your work experience, and lots of educational institutions. <shrug>

And I'm just partial to it, bein' a local gal....

Nice training rides on all kinds of hills, too, within very easy striking distance. I miss it. The winters really aren't that bad in Madison. Maybe a few good snow storms, but the main the thing is the cold. If cold doesn't bother you too much, you'd be fine.

Ahhh cypress...that's not a sign, that's a billboard. But worry not! Though the womenfolk leave, your bike never will.

A biased reccomendation: The Ulster County region of the Hudson Valley is all sorts of awesome. Catskills to the north, Shawgunks at your doorstep, rolling/flat terrain for days you just feel like taking it easy. On any given day you could do a ride with 10K feet of climbing, or stick to the flats and barely climb at all. The winters are kind of nipply but totally rideable, and the spring, summer, and fall are all great.

Emotionally draining relationship gone. Less stress. Life simplified. Can ride as much as I want without fear of facing the woman's wrath. And I've got a chip on my shoulder.

Speed? Expect exponential increases ;)

I lived in Portland 2 yrs, and for integrating cycling into everyday life, its the best. You can ride to everything. But Colorado has better mt biking, hands down, and big mountain road rides. Here in Durango I ride all year long, with a short break here and there in winter. Dont know about Co Springs. The whole town seems a bit wacky, if you ask me.

Is this a hint?

Sounds to me she values her own goals more than you. I only say that with the limited information i have of course.

CyLowe, trying to get someone to move to the midwest should be a crime. Go to the Rockies, west, or south east...and live happy.

We were going to move to Asheville until an unexpected family crisis
came up. When I was there looking for a house, all I could
think about was "Oooohhh NOooo...I am going to have to ride this ?!?!?!?"
Im in Vermont too, Im generally not afraid of hills.
