In Toronto the subway and bus are approx $2.10 if you buy tickets or tokens in bulk. The cash single fare fee is slightly higher. The monthly pass is not a deal unless you use the system more than for just commuting, and in my case I might cycle to work in any month of the year, so I don't buy a pass.

From near my house to downtown (5+ miles) there is a rush hour express bus at double fare. It stops at ever stop in my neighbourhood and downtown, but in between, there's a zone where it skips 2/3 of the stops, so it's slightly faster than the normal bus, and takes about 45 min including walking and waiting times, and you can count on always getting a seat. Or, I can walk to the subway (10 min) and then transfer to a streetcar downtown and get to the office at the same speed, but half the price - and I usually have to stand.

Service is very regular on all routes I use. Normal rush hour service is every 10 min or less.

It's free for me (with a univerity faculty/staff ID), otherwise it's a buck or a buck and a quarter.
