and?

Well, seeing as that Zabel was "the only active racer among an avalanche of doping confessions last week," and that there was some speculation Milram might take some sort of disciplinary action, I, for one, was interested to learn of the decision to keep him on the team. I thought, perhaps, some of the other readers of the Road Bike Racing forum might be interested as well.

My most sincere apologies if I misjudged that and wasted your valuable time.

Milrarm should take disciplinary action against Zabel for having such an extreme case of helmet hair. It really reflects poorly on the sponsor.

Davey, thanks for sharing, but it's a shame you didn't express your own views about the news.

Botto and Trevor98, you are 2 dinosaurs on this forum, but aren't you being a bit too harsh? I don't read velonews every day. Is that a problem?

I think, in this case, allowing Zabel to continue is a great sign. A superb sign.

Nobody put pressure on Zabel to speak up. Milram keeping him (at least until end of the season) means other "active" riders might admit doping with the hope of getting away with it. Putting things straight, admitting the peloton was wrong in systematically hiding the situation.

But more important, how will the peloton react, when Zabel takes part at next race? Will tehy treat him like another rider, or will he be "banned" by his colleagues for "spitting in the soup" (Armstrong's words towards those saying there were still drugs in the peloton after 1998).

So the "and" is an important one, yes, because I love cycling, I love Grand Tours, and I prefer a heroic rider coming third or fourth "clean" than a 4 times (or 7 !) winner of Tour de France on forbidden methods.
No wonder France's most popular national rider was Poulidor, who never won the Tour and didn't even wear the yellow jersey for one single day.

Odd. Why such harshness against the open-endedness of the start of this thread vs this one (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=302129)?

Whatevah...it's all good.

Back on topic: Disagree with the "good for Zabel for coming forward"; at best, it's a case of someone wishing to come clean with past grievances to clear their concious...more likely, they saw the writing on the wall and did a calculated move to announce it themselves before it comes out regardless.

I think, yes.

depends.
on what? I read Gazetta dello sport, El Pais, Die Welt, L'Equipe, cyclingnews.com, radsport-news.com, etc, so velonews for me is not THE top cycling site to read from. If a member of this forum points at an article, I'll look it up. If it doesn't interest me, I'll stop reading after 3 lines. That's what I did in this case, because velonews article less complete then the following one

Maybe it "depends" on whether or not you get your cycling news elsewhere. You do. So then, no, it's not a problem.

Try not to read so much into a one-word reply.

So let me get this straight, Zabel admitted to doping years ago and not liking it for whatever reason and his team, Milram, doesn't fire him and we here are supposed to react with shock/anger/surprise?

Zabel's doping is mere trivia unless you don't buy his explanation and think he is still doping. What is there to discuss in this discussion forum?

As for the reactions vs the Riis admission thread- read my posts in there too. His doping past is moot and mere trivia. If he is helping his riders dope now and someone can prove it then that is relevant. Neither Riis or Zabel's confessions about 10+ year old actions are meaningful- especially considering Zabel's confessed doping was only a week long (as confessed) and Riis is long retired as a rider (if he is helping riders to dope, which is likely, then such help is an issue).

These admissions of long ago doping are a distraction and mean virtually nothing. Is anyone surprised at any of these admissions, or even really disappointed?

What does anyone expect of the teams like Milram? Or of Professional cycling?

He is one of my all time favorites and still is. I'm still waiting for someone to say they tried it but did not inject...Basso's came close.

Stapleton already said if Milram canned Zabel he'd hire him back in a minute, which seems kinda odd considering how anti-drug they were at the star of the year. Z-man was a long time Telekomer. He should retire in the pink anyaway.

Yes, yes, yes ! Because they are AGAINST nature of the strict laws of the peloton. Code of conduct is "never spit in the soup". The first one to admit to doping, and worse to hinting to (or "at", ??) doping by others, is a dead man (well, not litterally !) in the peloton. So please please please, let them talk. So in future, the youngster, who sees his colleague injecting, will speak up without fearing the revenge of the peloton.

So your surprised by the admission but not the original act? I guess that was my point. On the code of silence, notice none of these admission riders are pointing fingers. They are only acknowledging their own culpability. They are still bound by that code- especially a current rider like Zabel. Was he the one that expressed concerns about going into a ditch during a race?

As far as I concerned the admit to really old doping is just gossipy trivia so don't expect many people to get really worked up about it.
