Not to be a jackass, but the beauty seen is so one-sided.....their idea of beauty is not my idea of beauty, I'll say that much.

I'm pretty much in agreement with that. I haven't watched one of those beauty contests since I was about 19. I have a cousin (26 or 27 now) who was in one at about age 17. As family we all had to go to "support". It was sick what some of those girls were doing (many at request by parents) just to "look beautiful".

And the winner would get a sixer of Schlitz.

Of all pagents, those disgust me the most. This might be a little mean of me to say but...then they wonder why their daughters become anorexic or bulimic. These little girls are placed in a society in which beauty and elegance is key so they're mindset on everything changes. They become focused on their body, face, weight, what others think of them, etc. I just feel as if they're going to flirt with a risky and painful lifestyle.

I was never into watching these beauty contests and knew nothing about them until a friend we use to baby sit became the selected one from her country in the one celebrated in PR some years ago. The stories she told would make anyones stomach turn. Starting with the food, the girls get to eat only the the food that is offered at all these promotional cocktails parties and thats it, many faint situations occured not because of the heat but of malnutrition. There were optional private parties where interested girls could go meet gentlemen that were "well to do" usually married successfull businessmen.
In some instances the girls, when representing poor franchises, are sent to the pageant and are given the bare minimum. In our friends case she had to pay for all her dresses , customes and even the give away lilte presents and souvenir they must carry. We had to help her as she went deep in debt in order to attend the contest.
And talking about rigged.... she herself in a coktail party a week before the contest told me to go take pictures with the three finalists. I did and guess what??? Everyone in the contest knew who was going to win....and thus my friends and me got pics with the one that won and the first finalist... Its all rigged
The night the contest is over, everyone of the contest left and could not care much about the contestants many were left to fend for themselves... As our friend said. One minute i was surrounded by caring personell and security and the next i ceased to exist.....

+1,000,000! Dressing a child up like a 30-year-old hooker is disturbing, but the long-term effects of being exposed to the societal pressures that early have to be a bad thing. Especially when you consider that most of what drives it are the parents anyway.

I'm not a huge fan of beauty pageants in the first place. It just seems weird to put a bunch of beautiful women in a room together, and say, "Okay, on a scale of most to least pretty, it goes you, you, you, you, you, uhh, you, and... you. The rest of you, try again next year." As if beauty can be expressed by a strict set of numeric values that everyone can agree on.

That said, the baby and young child pageants are just disgusting. Taking a six-year-old girl and dressing her up with adult clothes, hair, and makeup, and applying adult "standards" of beauty to her while comparing her to other children? Sick. These kids aren't even allowed a childhood (And you know what? Screw adulthood, kids should be encouraged to be and act like kids for as long as possible!), let alone what screwed up teenagers and adults they are likely to become. It's really quite cruel.

It makes me happy that you and DrPete see where I'm coming from. Don't get me wrong, the women in the adult pagents are gorgeous but, for heaven's sake, please let a child be a child.

Also, I feel as if it could the impression to the little girl that "hey, its ok that you dress like this." Imagine how these girls are going to dress when they're older. Other than looking at the child psychologically, someone should really check out the parents.

Exactly what I was thinking, but worded far better than what I would have said ("My take is this: only people who care about child beauty pageants are the parents who are abusing the kids, and closet pederasts" would have been my words).

Honestly I think the whole beauty pageant concept at all is annoying as hell to begin with.....I guess that's my different tastes in so much as what's beautiful.

Also, I feel as if it could the impression to the little girl that "hey, its ok that you dress like this." Imagine how these girls are going to dress when they're older.Even worse, it seems that it would give the girl the impression that people will like her better if she dresses provocatively. What an awful message to send to a child.
