Easy question....Who's your favorite SNL comic of all-time? From the old days to the new (I quit watching myself in the 90s).

My vote has to go to Dennis Miller.

My favorite skit of all time is "Cowbell" with Christopher Walken.

Murray, Bill.
That would be a very, very close number 2. I think Bill Murray is one of my favorite all-time movie comic actors (its that dry humor of his). Life Aquatic is one of my favorite all-time movies now....dry humor at its best.

For Weekend Update? Miller, with Norm McDonald a close second, simply because neither of them gave a crap about the rest of the show.

Funniest sketch? The Chris Farley v Patrick Swayze Chippendale's dance off.

Funniest fake commercial? Farley and Sandler's housesitting gig for Schmitt's Gay Beer

Or maybe not. Lots of other funny moments, but there is so much dreck to sit through to find it.

character or cast member?

phil hartman ranks up there for me. he was one of the most versatile cast members. ditto for steve martin. akroyd was great for his subtle comedic genious.

characters....just off the top of my head,

darrell hammond as sean connery
norm macdonald as burt reynolds

Ackroyd was in some of the funniest skits of all time: the Bass-o-Matic, the Consumer Watch bit with Candice Bergen ("Bag 'o Glass"), half of the Wild 'n' Crazy Guys with Steve Martin.

One of my favorite skits of all-time was John Belushi as the tv-crazed man. His wife got sick of him ALWAYS watching TVs...she would bust them up....he had them stashed everywhere...in cabinets, etc... When all done, she left, he reaches inside a big smashed TV and pulls out a small working tv from inside. :D

John Belushi. Its truly unfair to try and pick out just one thing he did, but one of my personal favorite characters he did is Joe Cocker.

That took some nads, since Cocker was standing next to him.

Weird piece of trivia for you, Steve Martin was never a cast member on SNL. He is hilarious though.

I started watching in the 90's. No one on that show makes me laugh as hard as Will Ferrell. My top 5:

1. Will Ferrell
2. Mike Meyers
3. Dana Carvey
4. Phil Hartman
5. Billy Crystal

These 5 could really be in any order.

I don't know about cast members, but Christopher Walken is my favorite host. Walken's Life Raft skit is hilarious--I can't find any video, but here's the transcript:

Oh, Jack Handy's stuff is good, too.

Murphy & Murray...tied for first.

Farley and Ferrel second place, tied.

Gilda R. : honourable mention as the straightest comic ever seen. She never broke character. Awesome woman in the tradition of C. Burnett and L. Ball.

I base my answers on how much they made the other cast members crack or forget a line.

I'd say Murhpy and Murray as well, but John Belushi gets my 2nd place vote. He was an hysterical nutcase who seemed not to know the meaning of the word "inhibition".

Of course, I don't think I've watched a single episode since the 80's. :o

I highly recommend Live From New York for every SNL fan. It's basically an oral history of the show. Some things that may or may not surprise you: everybody loved Gilda, everybody hated Chevy Chase, and everybody was really sad but not that suprised when Belushi OD'd.

On the opposite end we have Andy Kauffman. While he was awesome, in my opinion, he had little to do with the show.

Although, I must say, none of the recent SNL shows I've seen even compare to his crappy skits. Thats why I haven't seen a SNL show in at least 2 years. At least not the new ones.

No, it really aired--I think the youtube version is uncensored, though.

It became a hit with a couple friends of mine at the hospital, and then one day Justin Timberlake comes to visit. My friend Ian actually met JT and got to chat with him... A brief transcript:

Ian: "You know, Justin, I have to say that the **** in a box helps get me through the day."

Justin Timberlake: "Uh, I'm not sure how to take that."

:D

But just in case you didn't see it, this is one of the funniest SNL skits in years:

Andy Kaufman was never more than a guest on the show. I thought he was really funny. I haven't seen all of his appearances but the "Mighty Mouse" bit is hilarious.

Oh yeah, **** in a box is hysterical.

Sort of off topic, but in the pre WB/FCC crackdown era of mad TV I think they fully out did SNL. Things like the woodshop with Will Sasso, the Kenny Rogers bits, and a lot of real random crap. They managed to do it consistently.
