Foo - Saved a turtle on the way home.

OK, I'm a big softie. We were on the way home today and I saw a turtle crossing the road. It's a two lane road at the edge of town that drivers go 60 on. The turtle had little chance of making it across. So, I turned around, went back, stopped, hopped out of the Jeep after letting a couple of cars go by, scooped up the turtle and deposited him in the field he was headed towards. How did the turtle thank me? By peeing all down my leg. Man turtles can pee! He's safe though and that's all I care. As I was running accross the road with the turtle another car passed and honked at me. I was all ready to let the guy have it but then I saw he was giving me a thumbs-up. I feel good now.

Nice, I see plenty of turtles, but never crossing the road. They usually stick to the water around here.

Once I was exiting into the local Visitor's Info Center in I-95 (shortcut to Rt-1 in Kittery, ME), a car ahead of me came to a screeching stop. A lady jumped out and grabbed a turtle (about 1 ft in diameter) and put it in her car. She didn't notice that as she was carrying the turtle it performed an excretory bodily function down her leg. :eek:

I laughed my A$$ off. :roflmao:

i saves a turtle for my brother, it was the size of a silver dollar now it is the size of my head. it eats like 25 decent sized fish a week

I always hop off the bike (or out of the jeep) to move turtles out of the road. I move snakes too, poor b-tards. People aim for 'em.

Never had anything pee down my leg, though.

Was on a bike scavenger hunt last year and we saw a turtle that was by the water but looked lethargic. We called a marine biologist friend to find out what kind and if we bring it somewhere or not.

I saw a turtle in the middle of the road on my century Monday. He looked like a dinosaur! I didn't pick it up, but I bounced my tire behind it and made it go to the other side of the road.

On a recent ride I found this chap in the middle of the road, and so I helped him on his way; of course I'd no idea from which side he'd started, so I might have popped him back into the pond from which he'd spent the whole morning escaping; oh well, them's are the breaks I suppose… :(

My dads friend barely saved a silver dollar sized turtle from a semi truck about 12 years ago. Its now quite a big pet of his.

Turtles are awesome.:)

I blocked for one crossing the road a few years ago. I got a lot of strange looks until they saw the turtle I was protecting. The thing was huge!

I picked up a Snapper last year that was at least 14 inches in diameter. Those things are just plain prehistoric looking!

On a recent ride I found this chap in the middle of the road, and so I helped him on his way; of course I'd no idea from which side he'd started, so I might have popped him back into the pond from which he'd spent the whole morning escaping; oh well, them's are the breaks I suppose… :(

Sounds like an aligator snapping turtle.

I came across one, last year, attempting to cross a high speed road. He made it known by hissing, that he didn't want any help, but... He was covered with leaches...yuck! I picked him up anyway, keeping the business end far away from anything important on my body, and walked it over to a stream, plunking him into the water.

He wasn't thanking you! He was just scared that this huge alien from the sky has scooped him up and may be taking him away to conduct ... se--ual experiments! hehehe

A few years ago, I saw this large garter snake crossing a busy country road. I stopped and sort of "herded" him towards the place he was going to. I never knew that garter snakes reared up when threatened so it was a bit of a shock when it came at me! :o

Happy to hear that there are other wild life lovers out there. Two Thumbs Up. One year Stacey and I got a snapper turtle out of the middle of the road twice. Not saying it was the same one, the second time he/she did not want to get out of the road, it hissed at us. Another person came a long and rolled it out of the road with a stick or something and it rolled down the slop to the creek. It was okay, seen it get up and go to the creek.

That turtle probably had some super thick indestructable shell and made it a hobby to derail trains on the other side of the road by placing himself onto the tracks.

West; I just assumed that he wanted to keep going in that direction.

For all you turtle savers out there, there is one important thing to keep in mind when scooping them up for safe deposit on the roadside. When you pick one up ALWAYS take him to the direction he is headed. Don't pick him up and take him back where he 'was', take him where he is going. Turtles are headed in that direction for a reason. You are not going to change his mind by turning him around.
