I found an interesting Power Point from:
http://www.policy.rutgers.edu/faculty/pucher.html

The PDF titled "BikeWalkPublicHealth_April6.pdf" near the bottom is
particularly interesting to me. I had never heard of streets where
bikes have absolute priority over cars. This powerpoint brings together
issues and answers from all over the world. The data that shows that
the more people cycle the safer it becomes is also interesting. Apparently
if enough people cycle we can ditch our helmets.

That was an interesting presentation. I have to agree, after living for a month in Germany (this was back in 2000) with a host family, it is much easier to use a bike for transportation there than it is here, there are far more bike/walking paths that cut through town and make it easy to get places while largely avoiding congested roads. And this is the surprising thing... The paths actually went somewhere! Not like most paths here which are more intended for "recreational" use and really don't often go many useful places.
