i've been told a "internal" headset goes in there. does that mean i can buy any internal headset online and it will fit?

No! There are multiple internal standards. Campy,Cane Creek,TH,etc...

Follow this advice to avoid wasting $. Different angles of the bearings and heights for different headsets.

There are also two very different types of "internal" headsets, "Integrated" where the bearing cartridges sit right in the headtube ends and "Zero Stack" that uses separate cups pressed into the headtube flairs and serve as bearing seats. They are not at all interchangable.
