Whoo!

"Posted Friday, May 25, 2007: The mudslide on Henry Hudson Drive ("River Drive") has been cleared, and the pavement and shoulder have been restored to a condition that safely allows for the passage of traffic. The park's maintenance department has reopened the Drive and it should remain open, unless conditions change to warrant an additional closure."

I didn't even know it had been closed, shows you how much I ride in that area.

I rode it on the 27th.

It's open, but there are significant potholes and stretches of bad road, as well as loose dirt on the road. It can be kind of sketchy bombing down a descent at 35mph under those conditions. I actually used my brakes going down in order to avoid some bad looking patches.

how do you guys rank the hills on this route? i started at the entrance and went through the park and came back down 9w to the entrance of the park again. This hill was the toughest hill i ever did but i also saw some guys making trips up and down while i was on my way up. Regardless it was tough for me on my double (although my bikes kinda light), What do you guys think?

A lot of people use the Alpine Approach Rd for hill repeats. From the traffic circle to the police station you pick up approximatley 360' over .86 miles, which comes out to about an 8% overall grade, but theres one section of about .1 mile thats probably closer to 20%. I've seen people riding from the boat basin to the police station and back. More power to them.

I did the alpine climb last week, the whole section wasn't that bad, there's sand but just keep your wheels straight and make sure you're not out of your saddle tossing your bike side to side when you hit the sand.

What part is 20% and is it only 360 feet from the split to the boat basin to the police station?

I traced the road in National Geo Topo, so the numbers are approximate. There is a short .1 mile section in the profile, maybe 2/3rds of the way up that reads about 23%. I do remember glancing at my Garmin Edge during the ride and seeing 22% at one point.

I'm glad I don't have a Garmin!!!

That must have been the part where I slowed down to 6mph (from 8)
