On the second lap, I think a white mini-van took out at lease one person. He got up after 20 min... Ambulance, fire and police all came.
I saw another person with a messed up wheel.
So what happened?

I hate hearing this like this happening. Hopefully some witnesses could recount what happened.

I wasnt close enogh to the front to see exaclty what happened. But I think as the leaders came around the south corner into the south chute a van cut across to park on the right. The leaders clipped the van as they went wide and ass over tea ketled into the planters. At least one went off in the wagon. Do not know severity of injuries. Not too bad I hope. We were doing 35 in that corner on previous laps. I thought it was the third lap but my abillity to count is the first thing to go above 25 miles an hour.

Just checked my club message board-- sounds like one guy in my club has a bunch of chipped and loose teeth from it (ick!) and some stitches in his chin, as well as some bruising to his knee.

Well, lucky no one was killed or severly injured. Bob told me about a friend of his who was horrifically injured when struck by a car at the bowl. She is only now (after a year) recovering. It scares me, but I'm still headed over there tonight.

I can't get there in time, Herb. :o As it is, I will doubtfully get to the RB until 7. By the time I prep my bike with the light and all...well...I think you get the picture. You guys will be done with the hazing by the time I clip in.

Nope, it's paved to the Mt Lowe Rd and I've driven it in a car.
Don't worry, we aren't going near there tonight... :)

It's paved quite a way past the gate--you can see the transitions from open road to closed road to paved on the google map. The steepest parts are paved and it shallows out quite a bit once you get to the end of the pavement. I've done it on my road bike all the way to Mt Wilson, but last time I was up a few weeks ago there was a huge rockslide just before the tunnel (just before Mt. Wilson Rd) and I turned back because it looked kind of exposed to go over in bike shoes and hauling a bike.
You'll be unhappy about the steep long before you're unhappy about the quality of the road surface.

Maybe I'd dig the steep! You say it like I have a "steephobia." :p

I was at the front of the pack when we went thru turn 3 and the white van was doing ok, moving slowly to merge, but still moving. Then the pack passed him and he stopped in the right lane. The same one we were in. I was about 200 yards past the van when we heard the sound. Yikes, it sounded pretty bad, like someone had been pasted onto the back of the van. No one looked back luckily and we kept going, albeit at a reduced pace. When we came around again the emergency personel were there and the ride pretty much disolved from there. Two PAA guys hit the ground, Biting Ducks friend wrapped himself around a big rock in the median and my friend, went down as a result of locking up his rear and blowing his tire. He was roughed up a bit, but was lucky enough to ride away with just scrapes and shaken nerves. He's crashed at the Bowl before and broke his collarbone last time, so this time wasn't as bad. They were both lucky it wasn't worse for both of them. It's just one of the standard hazzards you'll encounter when doing the Rose Bowl ride.
cheers

Wow...I have been doing the RB ride consistently over the past 2 months or so. But, this weekend, I did a race Saturday & another on Monday, so decided to take the day off and recupe my legs. Otherwise, I'da been there! That sucks.
BTW bigdraft, what do you ride/look like? Safe to assume you're a bigger rider (hence "bigdraft")? I ride a red '06 Kuota Kharma and also give a big draft.

Some of us have to work then...
I go down to the velodrome in Carson and get a much better ride than at the RB 1-2 nights a week.

.Those guys that got hurt the other night are my friends, and I find this too upsetting to even talk about.vp
Hmmm, lets see I worked for Bob Shupper (one of the riders who fell) for 5 years and know him quite well. Tell me do you think he'll be back at the Bowl after this little biff? I do. he's a smart guy who's been doing this a long time. Considering he's crashed there before and he barely got a scratch thsi time I would say Yep, he'll be there. Why because he accepts the inherent risks that go with doing rides like the RB. The fact you think it's to dangerous shows your lack of race experience and knowledge. A good many of the guys and gals who do the RB ride, race every weekend and think its great training. The majority of riders know exactly whats going on on the ride and know when and what to anticipate. But since its an open ride, we can't control who sits in and there you have the danger. Sure it has more varible dangers then some fredly ride, but so what. It's up to the person to make their own decision whether they feel safe in a group environment like that. I would say that if you feel at all hesitant about jumping into a fast, race paced training ride with 200+ riders, then by all means please stay away. We don't need anyone who is unsure of their skills on that ride.
