Foo - Ride Pictures: Nice But....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Not trying to ruffle any feathers here but.....I love looking at people's ride pictures and other pics that they put up. IN fact the forums would be quite dull without them. But sometimes I get to wondering..."do these people get any riding in or do they spend the whole time taking pictures."
I probably have 6 pictures of myself that were taken in the last 12 months. I probably ended up in half of those by accident. I also hardly ever take the camera on the bike. I guess, I just don't enjoy stopping and taking pictures and ruining a good ride.
Some people put up ride pics on here where they show themselves getting dressed, going to the bathroom, mounting the bike, turning left, turing right, going straight, turning right again etc., etc. Again,I'm glad they do it, but i guess i don't understand the urge to do it.

Snappin' pics is the furthest thing from my mind when I go out ridin'. But then, sometimes I see something totally off the wall, and think to myself, "Oh, this would be so cool to post in Foo." :D
Still, I'm just too lazy to take my cameraphone out of my toolbag.

Yeah. I got a new, smaller camera with the idea of "gee it would be nice to bring on a ride." I've only taken it with me once, and even then only took a few shots. But I suppose looking for things to take pictures of was fun, kind of changed the character of an otherwise routine ride.
but i guess i don't understand the urge to do it.
That's because there's nothing to take pictures of where you live.

It depends on what kind of ride it is, I suppose. When I was doing more social rides, I always brought the camera. Now that I'm going for better times, I just don't stop to snap pics anymore. I do enjoy seeing everyone's ride pics though!

I know where you're coming from. I think it would also have something to do with how people ride and socialize. If I'm with the right people there is no end to the photos being taken. But nobody I know is into the cycling thing, and it's kind of difficult to take pictures of myself dontcha know.
I actually wish I had a few pics of myself with the bike and riding and stuff, just for the occasional post. But sadly I have nothing current.

Can't ride and take pix at the same time? Hmmm. This one is on the trail. Dropped the guy sucking our wheels, sat up, reached into the jersey pocket, took a pic at about 20 mph, put it away and continued. What's so hard about that?
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l267/gulpxtreme/trail.jpg
This oneis from an organized ride after 12,000 ft of climbing.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l267/gulpxtreme/ba6.jpg
This is a forum ride. I stopped to take a pic of the group on the mtn after 6,000 ft of climbing. When we do forum rides, there may be 4 or 5 cameras present. So we get pics from fellow riders to post. Many are 50,80,100 milers with mucho climbing. Now if that aint riding, I don't know what is!:D

Also want to mention, the SoCal forumn does plenty of forum rides, so just about every rider should have a hundred pics of themselves on the bike. Another one coming up this Saturday, so get ready for some more!:D

There are plenty of things to take pictures of. Whether they would be interesting is a different matter. On the other hand, that leads me to wonder if you live where you have things to take pictures of. It seems that in all of your pictures, the lens is pointed at yourself, and I can safely say, i've seen enough of that.

Well I take my mobile phone (camera) everywhere. The mountains are beautiful around here, but it doesn't mean I take pictures on every ride though. The trick is to do it while riding. I do though take most of my pics on my commutes. That's because my city is immersed in beauty and visual history. :D

I usually just carry my camera on my long weekend rides in case of something unusual. Emus would be considered unusual.

Yeah, I wonder about this when people post lots of pictures.
I don't have a camera small enough to take on rides. If I did, I'd probably want to stop to get a better picture (not as steady as some folks). So I'd probably only do it on more leisurely rides.

Damn right. 565 FTW.

Heh, ditto. When riding, I often come across scenes that I'd like to photograph, but slinging a camera bag over my shoulder every time wouldn't be fun. I'd like to pick up a nice, small camera someday for such things, though. Maybe a Digital Elph or something similar.
No offense to anyone, but I'm pretty glad I don't go on any rides that are so serious, I can't "stop to smell the roses," as it were. I think that would take a lot of the fun out of it, for me.
<--- shots for newpaper. so i sorta have an excuse right

I have a very small cannon powershot that fits in the same jersey pocket as my cleat cover things...reach back, grab it out, one press on, another press picture taken, third press off...takes about 5 seconds while riding. Then of course there are those bridges you have to walk over, and when you stop for ice cream...

I know which bridge you're talking about, saw the pics. when cycle 17 came to ride with me he got a kick of me getting off my bike walking across the thing. I HATE it!
sad thing is that grated bridge is part of my race this weekend, no getting off my bike. UGH.

Any pics of this bridge?
I did a stage race last year that had us start on the other side of a huge 1 car bridge 60 feet above a shallow river. The damn thing couldn't have been much different from the one on "Me Myself and Irene".

c0urt, I agree... Ice cream stops are much awesomer than whoever stops at a starbucks or other local coffee place.

Yeah, when I'm doing a planned trip, I bring a camera, or if I am riding just to kill time.
If I am going to work (camera on grounds = fired), it stays home....if I am riding in bad weather, it stays home....and if I generally don't plan on using it, it stays home.
Thus most of my pics are when i have time to plan it, ham it up, etc.
And all pics of me were taken by myself at home....some people say that after a long ride I look something like a haggard old water buffalo, so I try not to take self pics after a 50mi+ ride.
if you work at a place where cameras are not allowed...hows that work with almost all cellphones being camera phones nowadays?

The first one is in Portsmouth NH on Rt 1A over the Sagamore Creek (I usually ride over it). The second is the Memorial Bridge over the Piscatiqua River between Portsmouth and Kittery ME. I've gotten use to the metal grate bridges because there is one at the front gate to the shipyard. They are going to do some major work to the Memorial Bridge in a year or so, I believe one of the things they are going to do it make it more bike friendly.

Huh? What's wrong with the metal grating bridges?
The local lift bridge here over lake Ontario (between Burlington and Hamilton) has signs to dismount. Most of the time I don't bother though - when you're off the bike you're taking up more space than if you are mounted. Or is it to stop you from falling over or something?

Some of us have too much time on our hands? I dunno. I'd never do this sort of thing for a road ride, but for the group of folks I ride offroad with? Sure. Different pacing, depending on the terrain, and who all is riding. Just riding? Stopping to session stuff? Shoot some scenery shots? Sometimes I take a ton of shots, sometimes none.
Examples:
Here. (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=289640) And here. (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=295178)

I take a lot of my pictures while rolling. Thus, I take my camera on the bike. I end up taking a TON more pictures than I need to, because I know a lot of them will be blurry. I also shoot at full resolution and never zoom in on anything because I know I'm going to have to rotate and crop images so they look straight, and by the time I do that, I might end up with a clean-looking 1280x1024 800x600 part of the picture that actually has the subject in it, which is just fine with me. I scale it down to forum-friendly resolution (usually 640 or 800 wide) and call it a day. I keep the original uncropped images, too, but don't post them.
Anyhow, I do occasionally stop to take a picture that has my bike in it, but if I'm riding with someone, I'll usually just have them take a pic of me while we're both rolling. Like my chubby commuter backpack-wearing fredness on my cheapo hybrid bike on a group ride over a month ago as captured by fellow rider Mark. damn I'm fat. And ugly. Well, I'm 10 pounds lighter now than in that photo but you couldn't tell:
http://www.localcycling.com/photogalleries/nodrop/images/trek_store_043007_025.jpg
or this over-the-shoulder shot that required tons of cropping:

Dan smokes a pack a day and doesn't distinguish between riding clothes and street clothes. In fact... Dan doesn't seem to notice he wears clothes at all. He owns like, two t-shirts.
And maybe you should hand me the camera so I can get picks of you while you finish climbing!!
