How big of a bunny hop can most of you do and what can i do to make it bigger. Mine is only like 1ft:(

Good job. I can only do about 6-8 inches at the most on my Hoffman.

I can tell just by the way it feels when I do it I am doing something horribly wrong (I almost always land on my front tire first which is far from good).

as high as i need? (probably no higher than barend)

If you land front wheel first, that means you are leveling out way too much. You don't always have to land both wheels at the same time (although it does look nice and is smoother), it is much better to land with your back wheel first.
I just tried some hops today after a long, long offseason (10+ months (and still not supposed to be back yet)), and was able to hop about 2 to 2.5 feet.

O...M...W...!!!

24-30 inches? With a ten month break? You are using HAX!!! LOL YOU HAXOR!!!

I don't know what it is but I started bunny hopping about two years back (not all on the same bike though), and I can only do about 8 inches at the most (I've never measured though so I can' be sure, and it's hard to tell how high it is when you are on the bike and not on the ground). There has GOT to be something I'm doing totally wrong, or else since the bike is heavy and I am thin we don't do so well together, hehe.

I'll try getting a few clips of me bunny hopping my hardest, and then you can watch and see what I'm doing wrong. I am in dire need of help.

Last year I would hop to manual on pic-nic tables, this year I haven't even really tried hopping to much.

I am really so going to get a vid up of me bunny hopping so everybody here can help me out and see what I'm doing wrong. Everybody can bunny hop at least six feet here it seems, except for me.

I could hop about the height of a picnic bench if I had to. I try not to do big hops. I'm trying to dial hop manuals at the mo

Haha that wasn't supposed to be bleeped out, just a pause between each letter. Otherwise I would have done O***M***W***.

Anyway, I am really going to start working on my bunny hops.

Haha. I'm not very good at hops yet, I can hop about 2ft when I'm going slow but I'm scared to do it going really fast.

I dout you can hop 2.5 feet right now. I dout you have ever been able to hop 2.5 feet. Maybe after another season.

That's nice of you. It's not like I measured. I doubt it's 2.5 feet, that's why I said the word "between." I'm guessing it's somewhere around two feet.

FuzzyRyder

Even two feet is a huge hop for someone who has been riding for the amount of time you have been, and after a fairly serious injury. I'd say a foot, to a foot and a half seems more believeable. I'll need pics to belive anything better then that.

2.5 ft, that's only an inch or two above stem. that isn't THAT huge of a hop.

2ft is only a few inches over tire height. That isn't hard at all. I've seen plenty of n00bs hop that high.

Then I must suck. Especially now, been about 6 years since I road my BMX bike, and much longer since I raced competatively... never could do more than a foot or so. Enough to clear logs and curbs at any speed I needed... but nothing trial-ish.

Maybe I need to break out the BMX again and see what i can do... it'll be like flying compared to the bunny hops on my Bianchi Road bike :D

I was getting pretty good before I hurt myself. The only thing lacking on my leg right now is some leg strength, which I make up for a lot in upper body strength.

I can hop a lot higher now, since I'm starting to learn manuals. I just don't know how to pump to make them longer.

FitRider 921
06-03-07, 04:59 PM
The pumping takes practice. You actually might do it by accident and then just learn by that. I have to do that again.

if your hopping something you can go much higher. I used to be able to do a foot to a foot and a half, but around here the highest thing thats not too high is a picnic table bench, of course thats on a bike with suspension, even thought it is a pos rst it still helps.

Lean back!

And feather your brakes.

Manualing rollers at race tracks is the best.

MadMan2k

Screw feathering your brakes*, it's a crutch and it squeals and sounds like crap unless your brakes are perfect.

*if you're manualing down ridiculous ledges like Mike Aitken, you're allowed to, but not on flat ground.

still trying to get used to a bmx again. I can make about 1.5 feet on an XtC XC bike without clipless.

Shogun, do you race? I have clipless pedals.

I race road and mountain. Basically anything with two wheels. Started years ago with BMX, took a couple of years off, got back into road for a bit of speed, mountain bike for speed and the adrenaline rush I used to get from bmx, spent a year training, started winning races, got sponsored, now I want a bmx bike again to have some fun on where I can just pull a bike out and not ride 20km each way to get to a mountain bike track or worry about fading light. But if you want to hurt yourself and have fun doing it, race some road or mountain.

Oh, and a bmx bike will complete a stable of just about every discipline of cycling. BMX, mountain, road and track.

And clipless pedals are the best invention for any kind of bike racing (cept maybe DH)

I have almost every discipline: BMX, Trials, DH, Freak, Pixie, Fixie, Classic and Road.

This is true. I only feather my brakes when i'm about to flip. And honestly, i don't loop out half as much as i drop them.

Bottom line is, manuals are the best.

I dont even ride BMX very often, and i can get a decent 2 1/2 feet... ive been going up 3-4 stairs and ledges without much trouble this summer.. And my bike is heavy. I think if i dropped my seat so i could tuck the bike more, id be able to do more maybe.

FuzzyRyder
06-08-07, 12:54 PM
But how long have you been riding in total. If you've been riding for a number of years thats understandable, but Gunz just started riding not long before he broke his leg, and most people don't learn that fast. Even if he did, being off his bike from the injury for this long chances are a 2 - 2.5 foot hop now is not a likely story.

thermo
06-08-07, 08:06 PM
I've been working on my bunny hop a lot recently and got it up from about 8 inches to 12-14 inches. :) I think I'm so good until I see everybody else, haha.

I found something about the same height as a tenis court net, but it's just that orange caution tape stuff, so i wont get hurt if i don't make it. If my friend brings a camera, i'll hop it for you all so you can believe me.

I practice a lot and get decent at things extremely fast. I ran out of the house yesterday after my mom was being really stupid, and I took my bike with me. I learned smiths in two trys of actually trying to do them. I'm pretty stoked... if only I could go out again sometime soon. My mom is misinterpreting the doctor and thinks that I shouldn't be doing anything until a year after I broke my leg. A year is in another month and a half.
