hey, im looking for a lightweight complete aluminum bmx for a friend. i noticed that most sites dont post the complete weights so i thought i would try here for advice. she is basically using this bike as a casual commuter so it doesnt need to be that strong at all really, but she lives on a 4th floor walk up so it being as light as possible is key. is 15-18 pounds possible on a bmx? cheap is good and so is decent quality parts, especially the hubs. oh and shes 5'4" so maybe a junior frame would work? any advice is greatly appreciated, id help her myself but im way into road bikes and dont know anything about bmx. thanks.....

Dunno, but I am building up a mutant old Freeagent Eluder alloy frame into an ultra light bike (anyone know if turning it into a flatland bike is possible?, after the ultra light build) by stripping the paint, running a mtb 9 speed chain, alloy cranks, NOS ACS race hubs laced to more NOS Velocity taipan rims with 36 spokes (~2kg hopefully) alloy post and bars, and some random light seat. Rear brake too and tuned magnesium lever. Dunno what fork. Excuse my lack of knowledge about bmx, this is a shop project bike I am building (polished frame, black highlights, polished wheels) out of the huge pile of NOS quality stuff we are never going to sell. Will post details.

Sounds like your going to be looking for almost a race bike. the Dk Fury or Redline flight pro xl or xxl might be what your looking for although the redlines are a bit pricy. i belive the xxl is around 650.00

19 pounds is possible. But you are going to have to either ride a race bike, or get a really light frame and spend an assload of money. Maybe buying a complete race bike. But those would probly be between 25-20...

complete would be ideal. also under 400? doesnt have to be that nice, just light and not a clunker as far as components go. anybody have any make/model suggestions?

I suggested a few for you but you gotta relize something. As when you go ligither on a bike you are buying a better bike so then its going to cost you more.

My GT Powerseries that i just got is about 23 pounds. It was also pretty cheap($300) and it's not a terrible bike.

Any used aluminum race bike will do, but your target weight is unreasonable. Speed on pavement is all in the tires, not the components.
