Northern California - Suggest a Bike Shop in the Bay Area

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey guys,
So, I want to know which bike shops you like the best in the Bay Area. I'm looking to buy a Trek 1000 and I'm just trying to find a place that has a huge selection of bikes with great service. So, where do you shop or what shop do you suggest (please provide location, if possible)?
Just to let you guys know, I'm new to biking and I do not want to spend money on a really expensive bike. I've looked into a few bikes and I like the Trek 1000 the best, but are there any bikes that you guys would suggest for someone like me (someone really inexperienced in all aspects of cycling) that is around the same price as the Trek 1000? Thanks guys and gals!!

Well in Berkeley the ones I know of are Missing Link, and Mikes Bikes. Missing Link sells Treks, Mikes Specialized, and Cannondales (I think). Both are descent shops. Missing Link sponcored CalCycling for a while. This year they switched to Mikes.
Personally I like Cannondale CAAD8 frames. It's a solid pro level frame.
Personally I used a bike shop in San Leandro. It was near to where I lived. Forgot it's name thought. :(

I am near the Bicycle Garage, but I'm not sure they have any Trek 1000's in stock. You'd have to give them a call. 510-795-9622
You could also try Chain Reaction in Redwood City.

You also have in Wrench Science and Hank & Frank in Berkeley. For Trek bikes I recommend Sharp Bicycles in Lafayette, not far from Berkeley.

If you just want to buy a bike, Mike's is OK
If you want more than that I cannot recommend them.
I'm in Berkeley as well - very, very happy with Cyclesports on Grand in Oakland. Talk to Chris Blease, the manager, and tell him Aaron sent you over. They have great service, carry trek's and generally really good to do business with. They also do a lot to support th local bike teams/clubs - lot's of community involvement.
You might also try Left Cast Cyclery on Dominguez - smaller shop but thier wrench has a great reputation. They carry Treks as well. Skip Wrench Science, only very high-end custom frames.
Edited to add - Quality fitting is the critical element, and one that both Cyclesports and Left Coast will excel at.

Bicycle Garage in Fremont. They include free lifetime tuneups with every bike they sell. And worksmanship is good.
Lot's of good suggestions, but with about 5 or 6 good shops in or next to Berkeley there probably isn't a need to trek (pun intended) to Fremont, Lafayette, etc. Buy local!

The only two quality bike shops that I know of in Berkeley are Missing Link and Mike's Bikes. I don't think that Mike's Bikes carry any Trek 1000 bikes. Karim Cycle on Telegraph is just a shady place. The guy there sells crap and know next-to-nothing on bikes.
Do you know of any other good shops in Berkeley, 8Lives? I want to visit a few of the shops in the Bay Area just because.

Does the above about cover it? You only know of two? heck, Mike's doesn't even make my list - Cyclesports, Montano Velo, Wrench Science, Left Coast Cycles, Missing Link, Solano aveneue Cycles and heard good things about Velo Sport on University but have never been in there. That's like 7 within 6 or 7 miles not counting Mike's. Berkeley probably has one of the largest concentration's of quality bike shops you could find.

I purchased a trek 520 from Sharps and was pretty unhappy with their build. The one I bought previously from The Bicycle Outfitter on the peninsula - los altos? menlo?? - was much more professionally put together. (too bad it got smushed by a car)
Sorry Sharps.

+1. It's a hike, but this is the best shop in the area, bar none. I haven't been in the Dublin store, but the Livermore one is loaded to the gills with a ton of bikes, and the carry Trek, so I'd be surprised if they didn't have at least on 1000 in stock in your size.

The Livermore location is the best shop E V E R. The Dublin store is hit-or-miss.
Livermore is a little far from you, but they have a great selection and outstanding customer service. And they have Treks all over the place.

Have you been to The Pedaler in El Sob on The Dam Rd? The guys there have been helpful and their repair prices seemed fair.
The Pedaler in El Sobrante. The Treks were recently on sale, I'm not sure if they still are. If you can upgrade to the Trek 1500 it is a good deal, esp. if it is still on sale. My friend bought one a couple of months ago from the pedaler for $950. Its got an ultegra crank and rear derailer. Other parts are 105, much nicer than the 1000's components.

This leads to another question ... which bike shop do you trust for building a bike? I was going to suggest Bicycle Outfitters, but I have never had them put together a bike for me. I think that would be the ultimate test on suggesting a bike shop for someone.

Stand in front of the Race Street Fish Company, facing the street. Look across the street to the right, and there's a dark sandy colored building set back a bit from the street, with parking between it and the street. Slough's might still have an orange and green sign. If you look just past Slough's to the right, there's a flower shop.
