Now I feel a bit bad that I posted his pic here several times in a joking manner.

-If nothing else, you made me laugh a bit, Joseph. RIP.

Too bad. Very sad.

There is a guy around here in his 50's who wears a bikini-type bathing suit, and nothing more, when he rides his road bike.. You can see pretty much everything from the back. Covers about as much as a thong.

I have been to Big Bend National Park. Very spectacular - something you might not suspect nor expect in Texas, know for its flat land.

RIP!

I hope, to preserve a shaky optimism, that he was simply yodeling naked at the precipice, lost his balance, and fell to his death rather than that he killed himself or was killed by someone else. As much as we may ridicule the outrageous, we'd live in an awfully colorless world if they weren't around. If heaven exists, I hope Joseph Gottschalk can follow A. Troll's advice there and ride nekkid!

:( R.I.P. Joseph...

He's probably riding in the clouds wearing a thong and laughing....

Sad end to a bit of an eccentric.

I think it is the eccentrics who make the world interesting.

And, go to beaches in the Caribbean, Europe and other places and you will see both men and women without even thongs on.

Imagine my and my wife's surprise seeing a nude male gentleman on a Beach in St Maarten (French side) lying face down on a webbed lounger. Yes, you have the picture!!

I'm betting that 52 year old man was in better shape than you,
and had better body definition.

No, its not a surprizing topic do a search on Thong
we've discussed Mr. Gottschalk before.
and there is nothing to LOL about here its a sad ending
for a free spirit/ Free thinker which we have all too few of.

Godspeed Mr. Gottschalk

Oh, don't worry about it- we're all entitled to our own opinions, and we'll often disagree here anyways, so you don't have to worry about flame wars!

Aren't too many "enemies" here either, although I see some grudge matches going on here! :D

It's funny, I just saw him a couple of weeks ago here in San Anto and he was just riding along. I didn't really care that he was almost nekkid, but honked, and gave a thumbs up. He waved back. I was just impressed that he was actually out riding his bike. The thing is that's kind of rare over here on this side of town. Most people would just as soon steal your bike as ride it. It's definitely a sad loss, he WAS still a human being after all.

Nothing. I was referring to a thread in the lounge
about hated SUV drivers. . .
I own a Durango, and my last good suv was a
LandCruiser so I have NO problems with SUVs
(well ok, H2's are just plain stupid if you ask me!)

I cannot help but wonder if this guy was just in need of attention due to depression and finally just decided to go somewhere and take a leap.

It is sad to read about and at the same time I am angered that it seemed noone may have talked to this fella about possible personal problems he was having which led to extreme attempts at getting attention. Lts face it, how reasonable is it to ride on a bike with a thong? I even have bike shorts that are not really very comfortable.

I hope he did not kill himself and die with a mind filled with turmoil.

Sam,

I grew up in the 60's so its very reasonable

From what I can gather from reading articles on net etc.
his riding with a thong wasn't an attention seeking measure,
more of a comfort issue (hey, to each his own).

It just doesn't feel like a suicide to me, he told too many
people where he was gonna be, talked to rangers etc.
doesn't fit patterns (but then nothing about this guy did)
of someone who is depressed and suicidal.

A strange end to a strange story. I am somehow saddened by it. Ride on,

Yup.

Also, need I remind everyone that American society tends to regard serious bicyclists as eccentrics?

I read in my local paper today that the thong man's death was ruled a suicide.

:(

Ms.Vicki

read the same thing in the Dallas papers. They said a
preponderance of evidence was the reason for the ruling
but never said what that was.

sad, very sad.

Man, that's too bad... I mean, I don't know him personally, but it always seemed like he had a zeal and enthusiasm for life.

I encourage members to read his letter to the editor (found on link on first posting this thread).

From what he writes , what is written about him, and pictures of him I don't think we KNOW what motivates him. But I appreciated his comments that we tend to judge morality by appearances and true morality is based on actions. IMHO he didn't seem to have a problem or want attention. I myself wouldn't ride like that but that is my problem not his. People do alot more unreasonable things than riding a bike wearing a thong.

These are called the nudist beach.

I heard that there are such in the USA too.

In our city on the shore of the Black Sea there are 2 nudist beaches.

When I cycled earlier this month from Vienna to Regensburg I saw the nudist beach on the Danube river with quite a few naked men and women. Some walking, some laying.

I never myself was on the nudist beach naked. But I have to admit that I have been in the seemingly usual hotel in Western Europe, where one could visit the swimming pool and sauna, but only naked. First me and my spouse were bewildered by it, but then we decided to swim in the swimming pool as otheres hotel guests did too.

Actually it was forbidden to visit the swimming pool if one had some clothing on. I know, because we tried once, but were told that we can not swim in the swimming pool with pieces of clothing on.

On the other hand, what is wrong with human body, that we should hide it by all means?

If the man wants to ride in a thong, let him ride in the thong. It seems to me that he looks in the thong better in his 52, than many other would look in Guchi suits.
