Electric Bikes - eBike videos

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
When eBikes in Ontario became legal, an Ottawa newspaper made THIS VIDEO (http://cyclesantamonica.blogspot.com/2007/05/e-bikes-canada.html) which is worth watching to answer some quick questions.
There's a few youtube videos on eBikes as well which I will post links to in the upcoming days.
Post some of those videos if you have 'em.

Hi, cool video I play with bikes like that sometimes, its better to stay behind them coughing and making noises! ha ha it really gets them going! how fast does the Bionx go? 30mph on my bike is easily good enough to see off even the best of local cyclists however those tour de france riders can do 45-50mph on the flat!! X5 at 72V would be needed!! ha ha, could you have overtaken this guy?
Cheers

He was only doing 32 km/h or something close to that. When I pulled up behind him I was doing 38 km/h and still accelerating. I had to back off.
I actually did pull away from him a bit later on but my camera's memory filled up. Keep in mind that this isn't with a camcorder; this is with a 5.0MP digital point and shoot in video mode. I used the Canon digital Elph SD30 as seen here:
http://www.gearlive.com/blogimages/Canonsd30.jpg
So my 2.0GB SD card filled up because I didn't delete the morning video as I was heading into work. a 2.0GB card will only hold about 47 mins of 640X480 video from the SD30. Too bad really... the passing was nice because I pull up along side him and you probably could've heard me say: "...Passing...". And later on when I got to an intersection I pointed the camera the other way and said :" see that little speck down the road... that's him.". Of course I didn't notice the camera had stopped recording though. Grrrr.... :crash:
Hi
Yes I use a little canon for all my movies as well, nice and small and very rugged, I must go out and do some chase videos, there just isnt many bikers around here, I sometimes see one out on the open road and its so much fun, I know its totally unfair but its still fun.
At 72V on my puma I can chase and beat mopeds easily, even at 48V I can beat most gassers less than 125CC from a dead start up to 20mph or so! so cyclists I normally leave alone and give them plenty of room, some folks are quick on normal bikes though, I can push 25mph peddling on my electric bike as well on a nice flat road.

One of the most astounding things about that video is it just highlights the complete prominence of cycling in most other countries in contrast to North America. In the average 20-30 minute ride here, I see less cyclists than there are in 90 seconds of that video, less even.
A lot of them are kids/men on mountain bikes with no helmet, no safety lights or reflectors, riding on the sidewalk and carrying no racks/gear with them. Over here, cycling isn't seen as something for both pleasure and utility. Its almost entirely recreational, and there's generally a great fear of even attempting to traverse the roads.

Actually, a girl got creamed in Paris not long ago doing exactly what he did there, barely squeezing by the right of a large truck that's moving in the right most lane, right next to the street corner on a narrow street.

What kind of bike/motor/batteries/etc are you using in that video? Thanks, but since I set the worlds record climbing the steapest road in the world to 10.005 ft on electric battery power, ebikes are now Illegal in Hawaii. The garage made alternator motors I made for my ebikes and the 3 speed system is still a 1 of a kind that only I use to check the surf or go up mountain trails around my home where the road trip video was taken. So far there has been much interest to produce such a complete ebike but still 0 funds.I hate business LOL .. and jelous people hate me and my heavy 65 lb Huffy ebike that goes 45 mph on the flats..

Its not so much hate as it is annoyance. I find Hawaii's motor to be pretty neat, and his knowledge in electronics to be present, but the way he comes on here to denounce all other creations to be pretty pompous, and I get this almost anti-cycling vibe from him with the way he talks about cycling businesses being shut down or how spending money on a good bike is a waste.

I don't have 50 grand...
I just need a conversion kit to add an electric motor to a regular bike, and you seem to have the the best motors around.
Why not sell them? I need 1 right now, and 4 more in a couple months. You could probably make a good living out of this. This market is going to take off soon. I wish I had the 50 grand to buy your shop with instructions. You're sitting on a potential gold mine.
Oh, and why the heck are e-bikes illegal in Hawaii? You should be emailing all the state reps, the news, all the activists, etc on that one...
Anyway, seriously, think about selling me a conversion kit. I can put it on the bike myself...

Thank you for your letter spelling out what happened when the Leg caved into the Segway people and how it has set back advancements in
alternative transportation. This year I will introduce a bill to repeal
HB 843 (2003 SLH)and to restore the law the way it was. I feel this law was the result of a very questionable relationship set-up between Segway and government. Thankfully the House has changed quite dramatically since those days and I am hopeful that my new colleagues will support doing away with this blatant protectionist Segway law. If you have any language or other information that may have that I could submit to our drafting agencies that would be very helpful. Hopefully I can get support of the others you e-mailed as lobbying will be very important in getting this to happen.

To whom it may concern, At least write me back stating your views.
As far as transportation is concerned.Helping in any way to relieve automobile congestion should be considered and NOT be thrown into the trash. A recent change in the "motorized bicycle" and bicycle laws now make electric bicycles illegal in Hawaii. Until I believe 2002 Maui
and Hawaii had a great law in place that included a electric bike or motorized bicycle to be registered as a bicycle and included in the definition. Now all of Hawaii and New York are the only places in our nation that electric bikes are illegal. Most people have probably never heard of electric bikes. With modern technology a 20 lb bicycle can fitted with a 5 lb electric motor along with a 7 lb battery pack in the frame that make up the light weight 32 lb Bike. These electric bicycles can go at bicycle speeds for 20 miles without pedaling or go for 30 miles with pedaling if you want to work
up a little sweat for a work out to increase the range. For each
additional 7 lb battery just add on another 20 miles of no pedaling range or a range of 25 to 30 miles with light to moderate pedaling. In most countries around the globe millions of electric bikes are sold and used for affordable and efficient transportation. If you want to
see legal Ebikes I made that went up Haleakala when they were legal or see electric bikes for rent or sale in the "Ripcurrent Cyclery" store
across the street from Longs Drugs in Kahului (or other underground electric bike dealers in Hawaii. Dealers that probably have no idea that
electric bikes are illegal in Hawaii since President Bush signed a low speed vehicle law and description as a consumer product (being a electric bike) in 2002 These examples as well as 1000s of more types of electric bicycles that exist to allow clean transportation without toxic admissions by using the sun and wind as the source of power. Batteries can easily be charged in any home or office socket or by a small solar panel or wind turbine at home. How many cars could be eliminated off the roads and hotel parking lots if employees had electric bikes to go to work at lets say to Kaanapali from Lahaina or Napili and back ? Not to mention the savings at 20 cents a charge for
a 1 hour 20 mile round trip. The bottom line is lets get these worlds most efficient machines on
out on our unused bike lanes and provide a alternate to myself or anyone that otherwise has to drive there gas guzzling Ford needlessly. One of these agencies must be able to find the pre existing 2002 "motorized bicycle" law. What happened to this one ? It appears the
older law and amended proposal was omitted and replaced with this law.
"Bicycle" means every vehicle propelled solely by human power upon
which any person may ride, having two tandem wheels, and including any vehicle generally recognized as a bicycle though equipped with two front or two rear wheels except a toy bicycle. Since this revision (below)above took place after Segway transporters were lobbing every state in the USA to become legal and the below.
BILL FOR AN ACT appears to be a Amendment Bill after the fact that "motorized bicycles" were eliminated from the description of bicycle and Segway electric transporters were added on in a new classification and eliminating all electric bicycles and other electric vehicles that could be used as island wide transportation in the bikeways.Of course at a slower pace than a car but a much more affordable and cleaner concept especially when auto traffic is gridlock and you only need to go a few miles without sweating or sweating about getting to work or home on time..
"Motorized bicycle" means a device with two tandem wheels that is
propelled both by human power and by an internal combustion engine or a battery powered motor. If battery powered, it has a maximum of one thousand five hundred watts (two horsepower); if powered by an engine it has no more than two horsepower (fifty cubic centimeters), an
automatic transmission, and a maximum design speed of not more than twenty-five miles per hour on a flat surface unassisted by human power.Amends the statewide traffic code by defining and regulating the
operation of motorized person transporter platforms, motorized
bicycles, and electronic personal assistive mobility devices.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES H.B. NO. 834
TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2003
STATE OF HAWAII
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A BILL FOR AN ACT
This is what the pre 2002 electric law was close to and would it would
be excepted to get Ebikes back on the road LEGALLY for EVERYONE'S benefit.
Please Get this revision or the preexisting electric bike law back IN
this next up coming legislative session .
Setting a precedence in positive use of electric bicycles will createa
diversified economy and a way for residents and visitors to get around
without wasting gas or money. There is a lot that can done in terms of affordable transportation and eco tourism without road modifying if
Ebikes were legal in Hawaii.

See, its the utter pigheadedness about your project and the fact that you denounce other styles as nothing but junk thats where the annoyance comes from. As for the "hub falling off", this is another reason you annoy me. Don't be dumb enough to laugh at a hub motor when you're using wheels made of tinfoil. We've already gone over this huffy discussion once before, and you shirked away from that one.
What do you thinks stronger, an Alex DM18 or the junk that comes on a bike made of recycled washing machines?
And do you honestly believe that there's *no* reason people should be buying hub motors, and that the only reason they're so popular is that everyone is stupid? Strangely, there are such things in the world as convenience, noise levels, reliability and simplicity.
In the end Hawaii, *this* is why i'm annoyed with you. You can build a motor, but you're absolutely clueless as to the application of the vehicle you're using it on, you've completely ignored everyone every time someone posts a video like the dirtmonkey, bikes going through lakes, or god forbid, bikes that *have a real world purpose*, and you have no respect towards cyclists in general. That day you came on here practically laughing at the touring businesses because someone died, for example.
I personally have done business with the guy in the last 4 videos actually, he's worked some real magic with those projects of his. Personally, I consider the superbike to be a lot more impressive than someone stepping on competitive cyclists who are trying to have a competition to flaunt his electrohuffy.

What i'm curious about is, why did you bother buying a huffy and then doing all of these adjustments instead of simply purchasing an entry-level that would've had the durability on all of the bike, instead of just the wheel? Would've cost about as much.
And whats so special about a motor doing that? Well, whats so special about yours? Yours climbs a hill. His pretends its a submarine. Cleverchimp's carries 400lbs of people + additional cargo and the weight of a bike up a steep hill with less wattage than yours. Heinzmann has a hub motor with enough torque to snap the bike if not properly installed. Crystalyte never needs to be maintained. Nano weighs in less than yours and fits on a folding bike, practically invisible. BionX has a no maintenance hub motor that weighs what your kit does. Cyclone/Elation/Currie style drives provide a good level of performance in almost any condition. Those are all accomplishments on their own.
So I ask you, what makes *yours* so special, in a world of specialties? Do you feel that your accomplishment is by far above that of any other designer? Is the Superbike traversing 140kms of mountains in 3 hours inferior? Can yours go through a lake? Can it haul an Xtracycle laden with 2 grown men and their gear? Can it go years and years without needing so much as a spot of oil, through wintery conditions? Can it fit on a folding bike? Is it quiet?
Don't get me wrong, I think your motor is cool. Your attitude is not.

If you do, i'll go do it for you on a Crystalyte. Chances are, i'll end up with a broken wheel and you'll end up with a broken neck.
Broadway, I wish it was that easy, but if I ignore him, he's going to end up misdirecting people who actually come on here, you know, looking for advice :)
As you said, he's not in it for the good of this community. Just show the the videos that prove your points.

My point has nothing to do with videos. You completely ignored the last post I made, which was my point. Please go back and read it. Ultimately, the point is that you have nothing but negativity to offer this forum, and no solid contributions.
And the point of that post? Well, if you have no proof of serious off roading, why should anyone give it to you?

Over 400 lbs of people + cargo up a steep hill? Ride thru a lake? What? What motors are these? Where can I read more about them?

Videos show performance only if you film the entire trip and what you are carrying.Long videos may be boreing but they do show true results. I still havn't seen any elevation climbs of a 1000 ft rise yet let alone on the dirt. How much real pounding on the dirt can a hub motor really take ?. A center mounted motor ebike can take as much abuse as any other bicycle on dirt roads or trails as long as the batteries are mounted securly.Heavy hub motors with short spokes can't possably be too strong of a wheel to take much abuse off road or up hills.

Here you go, Saltydawg.
Those two motors in particular are the Stokemonkey and the Dirt Monkey's system. The Dirtmonkey is simply a Crystalyte dual speed motor put in a smaller wheel and a full suspension bicycle. Small wheels are strong.
Stokemonkey:

This motor known as the Stokemonkey is able to carry more weight than even the Xtracycle cargo system can handle, up a great deal of hills, and with an efficient power draw. Its been known to be able to haul over the rated limit of the X's capacity, which is about 200lbs of cargo and a 200lb rider. Here you can see the system zooming up an incline with two people in tow.
If you want to know about what the Xtracycle is:

Dirt Monkey:

Oh hey, these guys don't seem to have disappeared after all! There are some new videos for '07 with their new model. As you can see, the Dirt Monkey's motor has been sealed to the elements, and rather seems to like this lake. I've done something similar to my kit to make it more winter worthy, although these days I prefer to just skip the e-bike in winter altogether.
I guess I could mention that the skewer on the Crystalyte is about twice as thick as those on my mountain bike, or that you can mount any spokes + rim you want. But its all Crap + BS, even after all is said and done, after all, isn't it?
Broadway, you're right. I'm just going to ignore him until he starts giving people bad advice.

Sorry Randy, you're just proving the point.Show me the torque and a hub motor video of a dirt ride of over 20 minutes to see if the wheel is still in one piece.

I will take my Huffy with my Mavic 26" rims with 2.25" tires any day over that hub motor crap. What is so special about running a BLDC motor submereged in water? Let's see a video of the dainty so called machines riding on the dirt with a HEAVY hub motor.
You just don't get it.

You just don't get it. I have something that works, with more power in a lighter over all package that has reliability and performance. This YOU do not get it obviously.
Heavy Hub Motors Can't climb hills.
Hub motors fall off the frames.
Hub motors are not efficient through out the whole range.
Hub motors break short spokes easy.
Hub motors unsuspended weight gives a rough ride over bumps.
Basicaly hub motors suck amps.
Hub motor users are in denial.

It's not your bike, technology or anything like that. It's your arrogance that turns people off. I'd love to chat with you about your tech stuff but I don't like people like you that go around telling the rest of the world that they're idiots because they bought the "wrong" bike. You know what? I got the "right" bike because I didn't deal with a prick like you.
That's what YOU don't get!

And your 5lb smoking discs can't get Ken Trough up a hill. What's your point?
Have you changed your mind about your $10,000 challenge, or are you still afraid to race?

Have you changed your mind about your $10,000 challenge, or are you still afraid to race?Get over it and prove you can beat my elevation record YOURSELF.A overweight hub motor bicycle would not ever be a challange unless you cooked all the girlscouts pancakes at the 5 mile point if you could even make it that far without getting arested in your illegal contraption...Ken or anyone else ever had one of my motors.Where ever do you get your false information from ? Lets see your 4 mile hill clinb on the dirt with a 2600 ft rise in elevation on vidio showing your 22 lb hub motor fall off and smoke..

Talk about driving threads off-road, through bushes, over rivers and toward the edge of a cliff... You already have ****tons of threads about your motorcycle, repeatedly spamming your **** all over the forum is just rude.
And back on topic, here's an MY1018 powered bike:
