I have clip pedals I got from my father in law... they work pretty good, but I think for commuting I'd like a wide platform pedal with big old spikes on them...

My bikes all have SPD clipless pedals (except for my BMX race cruiser as I am still too wobbly), two bikes have Shimano 520's and the other has Wellgo WAM's. They all work equally as well. If I am using my hardtail on harder trails, commuting on ice or in snow, or riding my BMX I use some generic Wellgo mountain bike platforms with tall replaceable pins. Riding with platform pedals on the commute is a drag after having gotten use to being clipped in but I don't like being clipped in when it is really slippery.
I currently have Shimano MA80 mountain bike shoes that I put shoe covers over for about half the year, they are not particularily wide but come in a size 50 (approx 14). If you are looking for wide shoes you should take a look at Sidi, they have a few road and mountain bike models that are extra wide. They are pricey but are often on sale at Nashbar.

Nashbar - I have a set (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=108&subcategory=1181&brand=&sku=8042&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=Shop%20by%20Subcat%3A%20Platform%20Pedals) on my mtb and roadie.

Look Keo Carbon Ti pedals
Carnac Diagonal Shoes (size 48)

I got sick of breaking pedal spindles, so I went with Titanium on the assumption that it won't break as easily as a cro-moly axle.

I've always enjoyed Carnac shoes. Fit my wide feet very well.

shimano M520's on both mountain and road bike. I use Cannondale mountain shoes, they are much nicer to use at work than to walk around in road shoes.

Pedals: CrankBros Smarty's (Love em)
Shoes: Kingston Forte (Pretty nice)

The pedals are great as the medium platform allows street shoes if necessary.
The shoes have recessed cleats, which is nice. I don't have to change out of them immediately. They are a tad long, but fit my foot nicely.

520's on my roadie too. I like the suspended contact points. Had other spd models that worked fine but when the cleat rubs against the spindle area it produced a very annoying squeak. Doesn't happen with the 520's. I use Answer MTB shoes.

On my primary ride the full dresser cross check I use SPEEDPLAY FROG pedals and wear Lake sandals.

I wear the sandals 4 seasons (layer for conditions)

On my falcon road bike (SS at the moment) I use cheap shimano spd with a sneaker adapter on one side.

My MTB I use a pair of old Hutch beartrap bmx platform pedals.

I have to say I love the frogs ,the 20deg float is fantastic. I rode My SS to work today 19 mile and I can very much notice the difference of the 6 deg float of the shimano compared to the 20 deg of the frog. frogs rock!!

Speedplay X-Series road pedals and Speedplay Frog mtb pedals. In both cases I wear Specialized Body Geometry shoes. Previously, it was SPDs with Shimano shoes. I went from absolutely HORRIFIC knee pain to nothing less than glorious ecstasy!!!

Shimano M520 on my hybrid, my touring bike will get a pair of those too, as will my fixed gear when I get around to switching them, M324's on it now, and my other fixie, without wheels for the moment has PD-6500's

I sometimes ride my hybrid withour cycling shoes, no issues apart from a bit of slipping but since I only ride on paved roads with it it's not a real problem.

Schimano SP-250 platforms w/ Clip and Strap.

I found a great toeclip shoe for touring, by the way! Dr Scholl "Clifford" walking shoes. Very stiff sole, no hot spots and they look like Mountain Bike shoes!

Lake Triathlon shoes which have really a really nice vented top to go with my stainless maglia rose limited edition pink speedplay zeroes.
Honestly my wife bought them for herself but considering her her waist is tinier then my theigh she couldn't clip in. So now she has speedplay light action in pink. Being cheap as I am, plus pink being my favorite color, I kept them rather then trying to sell hers and get a different color. Whose gonna steal a bronze touring bike with pink lollypop pedals
I have stood and pedaled up hills on them with my 285lbs plus and they are really stable.

I used SPDs on my BikeE Recumbent but after a few miles would get some serious burning in the ball/arch of my foot if I was putting any effort into it.

On my road bike I use 30mm Pedal extenders with Speedplay X2's. The shoes are Lake CX225's in 48 Wide.

All this work just great for my 6'4" frame with 13.5 EEEE feet and a lot of natural toe-out twist in my legs.

Shimano SPD-SL Ultegra pedals (6610?), and Simano R-130 road shoes. Got both for "steal" prices, basically allowing me to go "one model up" from what I would normally have bought.

Pedals - Shimanp SPD's - a set of 737's, I think, and a set of first-gen "road" style, meaning exactly like the MTB ones except one-sided. You know, the ones that are white and purple. Yeah, those.

As for shoes, they are some long-discontinued Shimano style that looks more like road shoes than MTB shoes, but have enough rubber on the bottom to be walkable. 2 pairs, same type of shoe - one pair white, one pair black. One of 'em needs to have some velcro replaced.

I use one pair of shoes and similar pedals:

For the Mountain Bike, Crank Brothers Mallet C: http://www.crankbrothers.com/mallet_c.php

For the Roadie, Crank Brothers Egg Beater C: http://www.crankbrothers.com/eggbeater_c.php

Shoes: Answer Impact MTB: (On sale too, $60) http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/SH411B00-Answer+Impact+Mtb+Shoe+06.aspx

The Answer shoes actually work really well with the shoes. Just make sure you use both shims.

I was looking at the Crank Bros 5050. Any thoughts?

http://www.crankbrothers.com/5050.php

I am in the army and have had two ankle surgeries and have not been able to run for a loooong time. I am starting to ride to do some sort of cardio. I am afraid to go with clips because of the risk of getting my foot stuck, but I am looking for a solid pedal with a lot of room.

I upgraded to Shimano SPD M540 pedals both Road and MB.
I actually wore out some old Shimano 747's SPD after thousands of miles of use.

No complaints.
