What about our red stars? Will it all stay the same or are we gonna have to deal with all the ads now?

Congrats to Joe! He has done an awesome job of bringing folks together.

Okay, here comes my 2 cents....the new owners say "no changes....yada yada.." I've been through several take-overs/mergers and they always say that....and they always make changes. That's not especially bad....it could even be good if they have more robust servers and a tech support team. No more "oh, the forum is slow" tales. Yay!

Naturally, my concern will be "how do the new owners expect to pay for this purchase? More ads? Mandatory membership fees? (yes, I did contribute to Joe's checking account).

Maybe this is a good time to set up an alternative site on yahoo groups. It would just be there unused in case we all get dumped!

I used to belong to a woodworking site that was as community oriented as this one (we got together for BBQ's). The owner one day announced he was ending the site and that, no, he wouldn't even sell it to anyone (we made offers). In about a month he took his ball and went home and that was it, never to be seen or heard from again!

So, it could be worse.:)

Yes, I forgot to say that as well, Herb. He's done a great job with this forum and he deserves continued success in his endeavors.

1st order of business: Eradicate the SoCal forum...or merge it with P&R.

Thanks Sheldon.

Ultimately, there will be changes. I make changes to the site every month, most are so minor very few people notice. I make BIG changes every few years, a new style, colors, layout etc. I don't expect Bike Forums to stay the same, there will be changes, but I don't expect anything drastic any time soon.

As for how they will pay for the site? The ads cover the cost of hosting, the site has been self sustainable for the last 3 years or so. (the first four years I paid out of my pocket for everything). Internet Brands got there start as CarsDirect.com, and now own a dozen or so community based sites. They know what they are doing, and I think they will make BikeForums thrive in the future. Check out there site, they have quite a few big communities in there portfolio, each is unique and has its own community feel: http://www.internetbrands.com/ib/

I may no longer own the site, but I'll stick around for a few years as a moderator & consultant to Brian. The site is in good hands, I don't think there is anything to worry about.

Red star members will always have an ad-free option, in the near future, you will have the option to turn ads on and off.

I don't fear change. Change fears me.

 Good luck on your new venture, Joe.

As for me, I don't really mind ads and popups since I can always disable them in my browser if I find them annoying. :p

I would point out that this afternoon, two people representing Internet Brands posted in the other thread stating that the red star system wouldn't change. And for what it's worth, they're in SoCal, so we may manage to drag them out on our BikeForums group rides.

I know their CEO, used to work for him. If things get out of line, I'll give him a call... :D

Robert N. Brisco / Chief Executive Officer : Bob Brisco has been CEO, President, and Director of Internet Brands since 1999. He has led the growth of the company from an early stage to a position today of significant and rapidly growing profitability. Brisco has extensive experience in building high performing organizations and consumer brands, has led business turnarounds, and has been instrumental in the success of several Internet businesses.

Brisco joined Internet Brands from Universal Studios Hollywood and CityWalk, where he was President of one of the largest entertainment destinations in the world, hosting 10 million visitors per year. He oversaw all aspects of the business, including operations, marketing, sales, technology, finance, and entertainment.

I was wondering if you worked there when he did. So, how is Bob? Shall we give him a call?

I notice Roger Penske is on the BOD. Maybe he will give us a ride in an Indy car.

They are located in El Segundo. I do have an office about 1 mile from them. Although I only go in about twice a year.

Anyway, I am sure there won't be too serious of changes, they made a lot of changes at bicycling.com that didn't go over well and they have yet to recover. A lot of the refugees ended up here (like me).

(to the new owners: welcome to the off-topic, tangential nature of So Cal...)

Congrats on your move. So, is it now Dreamworks SKGM?

Good for Joe and many congrats as it took guts and sweat to bring this forum to its current and very marketable position and now Joe can take on a new opportunity (what ever that is). Good luck Joe!

I am sure this purchase will only enhance our experience on this forum. Maybe the look will change, maybe the owners will change some things, but I think the participants especially those of So Cal will not change and will only grow! At least that is what I hope for.
