View Full Version : new guy. brake questions.
Nice little forum you have here!
I havent been on a bike in 5 years. just turned 30, realized I'm fat(220), and saw they put in a new park down the street from the office. so i went out and bought a used terribleOne 20.5 barcode.
fit bars and forks
s&m redneck lite stem
profile three piece
dk cassette hubs on big city rims
kink mini gear setup
shawdow consipracy chain
macneil one piece seat and post
etc.etc.
anyway, the previous owner rode brakeless, and unfortunately, ground ALL the brake mounting provisions off.
So now I'm sitting here with a badass new ride that i just cant ride without brakes. I've sourced a couple of the hard parts and am a competent welder so i can get the lugs and stuff all back on the frame.
but what kind of brakes do i want? i have a nice set of v-brakes laying around, but they seem awful wide for this frame. 990's?, any decent setups out there for under $50?
any to shy away from?
Welcome back to BMX. any of the good U-brakes will do you fine. Just stay away from Tektro. I have Odyssey Evolvers & have no probs. Fly, Dia-Tech, Dia-Compe, Demolition are all good brakes to look at.

I'm not giving advice, but I think we need to see photos of the park, and the ride!

Brakes are for little girls. Just like tassles. And baskets. And horns.

I'd like to see you ride real trails without brakes. You'd die. Any rider would die.
I want a Unimog. Y'all can have my Primo lever and Evolver brake.

Tell that to Chase Hawk. Or The Gute. Or McMurray. Or Kevin Kiraly. Or Brandon Baines. Or...

Chase Hawk doesn't ride trails brakeless, at least not Catty and places like that. Only those hippy jumps in Cali from that Fox vid and 9th street. And i'd like to see all the other people you mentioned ride trails brakeless. Tech lines with burms and crap are hella hard to ride without brakes.

Berms aren't hard to ride through without brakes.

Watch S&M 4 in McMurray's case; Neil Armstrong 360 over a big double at the end of a set at Sheep Hills, circa '98. Bains has a twenty-pack (if not more) in his backyard, downhill, and he rides them brakeless; I've never seen him with brakes, ever, and I know that he has pulled double flips over some hefty doubles. And in Kevin's case, well, he's just that good.

I'll get on that.
But i did notice how you said he 3'd the last set. Which while still a 3, it's alot less daring then a 3 mid set. Because if he screwed up on that, he'd have to bail or stop, which he couldn't.
Point is, brakes are cool, and nice to have.

A 360 with your feet on the front pegs on a 40 pound bike with a 19.75" top tube is epic, no matter how you look at it.
