Hello all,
I asked about this on the MTB forum but figured I'd check here as well.
I am having some trouble with my rear wheel staying aligned during riding.

The bike is a 2003 specialized stumpy fsr comp, with avid disk brakes. It seems when I loosen the rear wheel and put a little weight on it to get the rear axel fully seated into the frame slots then lock it in the wheel is way out of alignment, almost to the point of rubbing on the left side of the wheel/and bottom frame member. (sorry for the real technical terms there, not sure what everything is)

The bike is almost new and hasn't really had any hard rides to bend anything just yet so I am wondering what gives here.

It seems like the left side of the frame is cut too deep where the qr for the rear wheel sits causing the wheel to drop deeper into the slot and out of alignment during any hard riding.

I am deployed in AK right now and will be home in a couple days and will contact Specialized as soon as I get home, but for now on my off days the show must go on! I need my ride here.

Thanks for any help.

right now I have about 1/8" of shim material taped into the slot with 100mph tape to keep it going which is working great until I hit some good down hill rocky stuff, then those avid discs scream once the tire is out of wack, then I re adjust and ride on , its getting annoying and for $1500 its REAL annoying.

see ya
Mike

If you flip the wheel around so the cogs are on the non-drive side, does the wheel still seem too close on the left, or does the problem reverse itself?

One thing you might want to confirm is that your wheel QR's cone-shaped springs are big-end-outwards, small-end-inwards, so they don't get between the axle and frame and throw the axle positioning kattywampus. Should look like this:

If the frame has badly aligned dropouts, you need a replacement. Take it to your dealer.
