I am new to cycling and am training for an upcoming 2 day, 50 mile a day ride. My longest ride was on Tuesday of 33 miles. It was a hot sunny day, about 85. I was pretty beat afterwards. The next day and even today, my eyes are sore. Like they don't want to open all the way and I need to blink often.
Did I sunburn my eyes? Get wind burned eyes? I didn't have sunglasses on. Anyone have any experience with this? Am I just tired still so my eyes want to close?

Always wear eye protection. The first time a big truck throws up a rock and it pegs you in the face you will be thankful. Large bugs, dirt, etc, this is all stuff to keep out of your eyes. Furthermore, your eyes won’t tear up as much when screaming downhill.

Drink drink drink. Where a good pair of cycling sunglasses.
I ate a bug the other day on my ride.

I don't think so. I drank lots of water on the trip plus a gatorade and have been drinking lots since as well. I considered that also, but can't imagine it since I have had so much. Pee is not dark either.

I eat bugs almost daily. I've had a bee get in between my eyeball and my safety glasses. I've been stung on impact.
It really sucks when a bug gets in a lung. I felt him in his death throes flailing around in there and then I started coughing and then almost threw up. It went away but came back fierce and I had to pull over. My eyes were watering and I was coughing a lot. Then a big chunk of mucousy stuff flew out, probably full of bug parts, after I almost wretched.
I don't recommend it.

There's your answer.

Yes! Eye protection is far more important than a helmet. The helmet only helps if you fall or hit an obstruction, but your eyes are constantly being assulted.

Yes, you really do need some kind of eye protection from debris. All it takes is one rock to the eyeball to make a $5 pair of safety glasses worth it. Or even just a bug....imagine you get some bugs in your eyes and you can't see at 20 mph in traffic!!!
It could also be allergies or a sinus problem. I know my eyes hurt when I have a fever or my sinuses are stopped up.
I wear Smith and Wesson mini magnums shooting glasses. Nice looking, inexpensive, very comfortable and safer than sunglasses.

The last couple weeks when I've gotten to the rest stop on my long rides I've had to buy water just to flush out my eyes they've been so irriated from all the pollen and crap in the air.
I've also sometimes had problems from sweat running into my eyes, especially if wearing sunblock.
I do wear glasses.

I got glasses and the sore eyes are no longer an issue. They were getting sore from the wind blowing in the all the time.
