I usually put some lime and salt on mine. I've been doing it ever since I was a little girl and I still have no idea why I do it. It's done out of habit.

'Cause it's good.
Like the salted peanuts on a Payday.

I was taught to do it as a kid....did it for many a year. Then one day as a joke I put a mountain of salt about 3 inches high on it and ate it. It made me vomit.

The next time I tried watermelon, I couldn't stand the thought of salt because of previous experience so I ate it plain. It was soooo much better.

I lived in the South all my life until a month ago and I've NEVER seen anybody put peanuts in pepsi. WTF is that about?

Heh, you conditioned yourself. I'm curious to know if you eat watermelon at all now. Whoops, I let the psychologist come out.

Not much really. I eat it when its in part of a mixed fruit dish, but I never buy one alone because I'm craving it or anything. I do buy cantaloupe and honeydew occasionally though.

That's peanuts in Coca-Cola, the small bottles to be precise.
My dad does that, I have no idea why.

My dad does it. To this day, I can't comprehend it.

Although, I got sick as a kid after eating mushrooms (morels, not poisonous mushrooms) and a lot of watermelon afterwards. Now I don't like either of them. When I'm at a chinese restaurant, I'll actually lie and say I'm allergic to mushrooms. Although, I will occasionally force myself to eat them just so I know I'm not actually allergic and that I still have the mind over matter thing going for me. But I don't enjoy them anymore like I used to, and they creep me out. On pizza, in food, raw on salads, doesn't matter. Mushrooms for the lose.

Watermelon, I like when I eat it now, but I still usually choose not to eat it because of my experience as a kid. :(

I got sick eating mushrooms a couple times, too. But the following 6 hours really made it worth throwing up a bit.

My dad taught us that when I was 7 or 8. That was back in the early 60's. We could take our quarter that we got from Grampa once a week and head over to Haley's Market on 49th St in St. Pete. Could buy a 16 ounce RC Cola and a bag of Tom's peanuts [salted of course] for that quarter and dump them in the RC! Man O' Man is that good. Even peanuts and chocolate is not as good.

Salt on melon (cantelope too) brings out the sweetness. it's good on sliced mango too- especially green mango.

Yeah some mushrooms are interesting little fungis.

For watermelon, I like it with a slight amount of salt....just a pinch at the top of it.

It's the whole sweet&salty thing.

I never heard of peanuts in coke/pepsi, but I do like chocolate syrup in Mr. Pibb (called a "dirty Pibb", due to it looking like dirty water).

Hey, don't knock it till you try it! It is totally addicting. It fills you up as well. I wish I had a nickel for each Pepsi or RC with P-nuts in 'em I've had in my life! I would buy a set of disc brakes for the MTN bike.

I beg your pardon! I'm a southerner and I do not put nuts and soda together. I prefer nuts separate.

As for the melon - with salt absolutely. It just tastes good with the sweet/salty thing happening. :D

Salt enhances natural flavors. Pepsi is an inferior beverage. Peanuts and Coke is where it's at. That is all.

Yep. Especially if it's slightly under ripe. You'll also see people put salt on cucumbers to take away any bitterness.

Plus, if you're eating watermelon, chances are it's hot out, and you could use a little sodium, too.

I like my foods the way God intended. Fruit is best the way nature makes it. No salt, No whipped cream, no heavy cream (except on raspberries..mmmmmm).
Peanuts do not go in my coke. I don't drink RC or Pepsi.
And, even though I'm a native southerner, I do not eat moonpies. Can't stand marshmellow.

Yup, peanuts in Coke, not Pepsi. I've done it once or twice, and honey--it's good.

I swear, the juxtaposition of sweet and salty, solid and liquid just dances around in your mouth. It's also an elegantly efficient way to combine food and drink, allowing a free hand to engage in some other activity.

Gladly!:) It should be the 16 or 20 ounce bottle. For some reason a can is not as good. You also have to drink some Pepsi out of container to make room for the booty!

So to done it! My great-aunt/-uncle worked in the Coca-Cola bottling plant here so I was introduced to it at an early age. RC will work in a pinch, tho. 'Maters with salt is a common side/garnish at family get-togethers. I think it's more of a cultural/familial thing, really, rather than strictly geographical. Just my 2¢. I'm from TN, by the way, and grew up in a more rural than urban area.

As a kid growing up in North Carolina we always put peanuts in a Coke. There were no cans back then and it may have been to watch the bubbles move through the nuts. It is an interesting taste, but it's just not the same with a can drink.

And yes, it is a RC Cola and a Moon Pie, preferably a double decker. Hard to find those now.

Do they still make 'Coke'?

Nature makes it with salt and cream! You just need to find a cow and a saltshaker...

Coke and moonpies are not of nature, this is true. I do quite enjoy both, though.

I've never heard of people putting salt on any kind of fruit in my life. You southern folk are weird.

Hmmmm I'm trying to think of something weird from Cali.

In our house we put ketchup on everything. Tacos, eggs, toast, my brother dips bread, cheese, fruit loops, into ketchup.

I happen to sprinkle cayenne powder on everything. Soup, eggs, anything I'm cooking needs cayenne.

A. I'm from the mid-Atlantic (although my paternal relatives were all Virginians and DC folk).
B. Ketchup is good, and so good for you. Helps to prevent prostate problems, possibly breast cancer. But now I just found out that watermelon has 40% more lycopene than ketchup or tomato sauce, but that's OK, as long as it has salt on it. :D
