View Full Version : Looking for that 'Trick' bike...

Hi Gang

This may seem like a silly question, but as a little kid I owned a Yamaha Moto-Bike, in case you don't know, it was full suspension 20" 'moto-cross' bike. I found it great as an all round off-road bike and I could do wheelies on this thing as long as I wanted.

Now that I'm a big boy (40) , I am looking for that same 'feel' in a moutain bike. From what I have seen most of the mountain bikes have the seat way high and the handle bars down low, not really condusive to wheelies.

I am just wondering if any of you might be kind enough to suggest a 'big-kids' all-round BMX, trick, mountain bike. ( if such an animal exists of course!)

Thanks all, Glenn

Klein is right, you are looking for a freeride bike or a dirtjumper style. Most companies have that style. Specialized P series (above), Kona roast/stuff (awesome bikes), Norco freestyle series (Norco 125 voted #1 dirtjumper bike this year). They all fit a little different to each other but the idea is the same. Slacker geometry, low seatpost and higher handlebars with a bit more travel than xc bikes. :)

Where is Canada?

Hi Gang

Wow, this forum is great! Fast responses! Thank you all very much for the bike suggestions, that appears to be what I am looking for. I like the look, all I have to do is try one now.

I appreciate the link troie, but I think that is a little too much of a 'niche' for me.

Maelstrom, don't laugh, but I'm in Toronto. I know how you westerners feel about Ontario! Whistler is gorgeous, I've been out there, my brother in laws brothers taught skiing there...Charron?

I guess my next question is the best brands I should consider? I appreciate the ones already mentioned, but are there others I should consider? I guess the sky is the limit on price.

The 'Big Hit' Specialized bikes have the rear suspensions as well, any thoughts on them? ( I do like the idea of rear suspension as well)

I saw one brand called FOES, looks well made, is this overkill?

Thanks again, Glenn

I have a Specialized and I think they are great. I havent heard one bad thing about the company. I recently read an article about Kona and how durable they are. You wont regret going with either of those brands.

Bighits are really sweet, I have one. If you were to get a freeride bike I would suggest the Bighit comp. I have the comp but I bought a new fork. I LOVE it.

No laughing. I just moved here 3 years ago from good old Guelph Ontario. I only started mtbing last spring :)

Coming from your background you will want some whippability to the bike more so than standard riding. The specialized bighit is a serious freeride bike for guys who like style. I agree with Klein look at the bighit Comp, it is a great bike for a great price with a good warranty. It is also very slack (seat much lower than bars) because of the required 24" wheel in the rear.

There are other bikes to consider. Kona Stinky Deelux and Cove G-spot are two great bikes made in Canada. The Cove has a similar warranty to specialized (lifetime) and is made right here on the shore.

Its a niche thing. You are paying for the name. Don't get me wrong, foes makes a killer bike but the Bighit is just as good (if not better) for much cheaper.

Cheers

to bad you didn't keep that bike. you could sell it and buy a house w/ the money. I remember those things.

I rode bmx for a good 15 years. now I spend my time on a mountain bike while my injurys heal from the bmx. I find it very easy to do pedal wheelies with my seat high in low gear.

what do you want to do on the bike? just wheelies? or would you like to ride some dirt trails as well?

I would suggest getting a low end mountain bike. this way you don't spend alot of cash but you get to see what riding feels like again.
they do make 20 inch full suspension bikes but they are really designed for a child and I think would be too small for you.

Are thiose Moto-Bikes worth a lot today? Unfortunately mine was reduced to a box of parts.

I'd like an all round bike, wheelies, off-road, city, jumps.

I took a couple of Norco's out for a ride, the 'Launch' and the 'Drop', they felt great! I think these bikes have the feel I am looking for. I'm going to check a few more out.

Thanks again, Glenn

well, yamaha no longer makes pedal bikes to my limited knowledge. I doubt you could buy a house w/ the money if you sold one but they have to have some value if for no other reason you don't see them around much.
