The chainstay bridge on my commuter is rusting. The paint is bubbled up.
The bike is a 1996 Trek 930 with about 6000 miles. Nothing special but I do ride it daily.
What should I do?
Just keep riding until the bridge rusts through and then get another frame?
Sand and paint with black Rustoleum? (ugh)
Sand the rusty area, prime and spot paint black? I do have an air compressor and a detail spray gun. Still the costs are significant. I've got some black base coat and a quart kit of clear. I'd need to buy primer, reducer and some odd and ends. I'd guess about $40
I don't think it will be cost effective to replace the bridge. I don't have any welding tools. I could send the frame out for repair, but is this frame worth the expense? The complete bike was $500 11 years ago.
