This should provide amusement for the weekend.

Wife and I are leaving on a short bike vacation this morning. 3 days of biking supported out of a car and a hotel room. (now that's wilderness biking at its best)

Took a minimum of tools, tubes, pumps workstands (small) to do the job. What should I have taken and what will I not have when I get there.

See ya all when I get back.

Just a credit card and cell phone (with the phone numbers of local taxi services and bike shops already entered into it's memory).

A good attitude, that your going to have fun and knock out some big miles, maybe.

I'm personally waiting for the day when AAA will provide road service for bikes:)

After you're all packed up and ready to go, check one last time: is your wife in the car?

Yes?

Proceed...

Check the bikes are on the rack and the wheels are inside the car or on the bike.

I have always found it is best to make a list, a few days in advance. Make sure to put the list in a special place, where you won't be able to find it until you get home from the trip. Then you can look at the list and say, "see, I knew we should have brought sunblock".

Advil. Carters Pills. Celexa.

That's what I'd take.

Got to the land of flat riding Friday afternoon. Motel was great (pictures later) Ocean somewhere between 25 and 35 feet from door, Falmouth harbor to side and rear of building. After riding the bikes to dinner, set out for a short 15 mile checkout ride on the new bike setup. 2 ten minute stops for small adjustments to the new handlebar angle and all is perfect.......almost. Being the edge of the land, the wind was blowing at least 25 mph right down the intended route. I now know the answer to the wind/hill posts. Hills are about to become my friends. Completed the check ride (which after dinner was done in normal shorts) with some saddle discomfort in the area where leg joins body. Went out to buy talcum powder and to check out plan B routs for wind direction.
Plan B is dead, heavy road construction, for of all things, a bike path! The new style bike path on Cape Cod appears to be an elevated alphault sidewalk about 3 feet wide (bidirectional!!!) with sharp approach ramps at every driveway and cross street. Right away has been lost for bikes at each cross street. Every self respecting road rider will be in the street, not on path except for the fact that path has occupied everything right of the inside of the white line on side of road. Patches, drains and road work occupies 2/3 feet left of this. Dead route.

Saturday morning dawned with just a little less wind so I set out in proper bibs to ride my age for Wednesday's Birthday. Completed 42 miles by repeating Plan A for 2 laps + extra's here and there but the damage done the day before (no talcum powder) had taken its toll. No 61 miles this year.

There was a bright side however, on a straight downwind leg from Woods Hole to East Falmouth, I averaged 19mph for 8 miles. Passed most riders except for the fellow a hundred yards in front of me, every time I would close on him (usually in corners) he would increase his efforts and pull away again. Never caught him untill he got tired and pulled over.

Rain for Today, so packed up and came home. The wife loved the motel, I had a good if not great ride. All in all a fun vacation.
