my friend convinced me to do this training ride with him. i can only hold about a 21mph average riding solo - but this group is going to be riding around 27mph in paceline.... do you think i can hang on to them?

Be scared! Just kidding. :D

I can only go by what I've read, but if you don't spend much time @ the front, and don't get dropped by the pack - you should be fine. Here's a quote that I just read:

"Research indicates that the racer riding at the rear of a two-, three-, or five-racer single paceline (which is a formation of racers traveling closely behind one another in a single file) traveling at 40 kph will experience a reduction in energy expenditure of about 27 +/- 7% relative to the racer at the front; if the racer is in the rear row, middle column position of an eight-racer pack with two racers in the front row, and three racers in the middle and rear rows, that racer experiences a reduction in energy expenditure of approximately 39% + 6% when traveling at 40 kph. At slower speeds, the percentage reduction in energy expenditure decreases, while at faster speeds, the percentage reduction in energy expenditure increases (Hagberg and McCole 1996)."

Hmmmm ..... 27mph - 27% = 19.7mph. Let us know how you do!! :)

I did it!! eh... well... kinda. The advertised pace of the ride was 27mph (A+ pace!!!), and I was able to hang fine up till that point..... but then they upped the pace to 30mph and i just got dropped like i was standing still. i was both inspired to ride harder and jealous of their strong legs.

this was my first real big group ride, and even though i got dropped, it was a thrill to ride in such a huge pack. i can't wait till the day when i can hang with them.

Congrats! I know how you feel.

My club has an "A" and a "B" ride. I usually ride the slower "B" ride on Saturday. I have tried the "A" ride three times. The first time (last Fall) I was dropped on the first hill. The second time (this Spring) I took a short-cut which knocked off 3 miles and was able to get enough lead on the climb (5 miles / 2000 ft.) to reach the summit somewhere in the middle of the pack, keep up on the descent to our rest stop/regroup point, before getting dropped on the next major climb. Finally, this past weekend I was able to pretty much hang with at least the tailend of the group (without taking any shortcuts!) for the first 50 miles before getting completely dropped. One other rider was kind enough to sit back with me on the climb back up to the summit.

I think that if I can manage to complete this ride just once with the main group I will be happy.
