Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run
By JOSIE LOZA THE GAZETTE
Kelsey Hurlocker would rise at 1 a.m. for a 10-mile ride on his bicycle to his job at a factory in Colorado Springs. It was his only transportation while his pickup was in the shop.
"Any way he could get to work to support his family, he would do it," said Mel Waters, his pastor.
Hurlocker, 43, was hit and killed early Monday while riding from his home in central Colorado Springs at 926 E. Moreno Ave. to Weatherford, an oil pump manufacturer on Marksheffel Road.
He was riding east on Platte Avenue out of the traffic lanes when he was struck by a 1988 Chrysler. Hurlocker was left lying beside his bicycle after the car hit him and the driver fled, Colorado Springs police said. He died at the scene.
Valentin Corral Mirelez, 28, of Colorado Springs, was arrested later Monday. He is accused of driving the car that hit Hurlocker and fleeing on foot, leaving the car behind.
Police said Mirelez turned himself in and admitted being the driver in the fatal accident. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run, and license and insurance violations.

That sounds familiar to me. In the small town I live in there are a lot of spanish aliens that have never accuired citizenship, drivers licenses or insurance and they are always causing accidents. They only seem to get a small fine and a pat on the back! This is what is not good for america.

KevinG I am not reading into what was posted as spanish aliens! I was just saying this is what is happening in my hometown. I dont think it makes me not good for america to be unhappy that I have to pay for uninsured motorist insurance because people of all types try to get away without paying for standard liability coverage.

Well, I've got to step into the fray here. I live in Watsonville, CA, a majority Hispanic, agricultural town. It's great to be a bike rider here because Mexican Americans respect cyclists. Why? Because (1) many of the field workers only have bicycles for transportation and (2) many children ride bicycles. I definitely feel the safest on my bike here than in any other place where I have lived. I don't feel as safe in nearby Santa Cruz. Even though it is one of the bike Meccas of California, it has many more bike related accidents than Watsonville, even though it is only a few thousand people larger. Oh, and did I mention? Santa Cruz is a very largely white community. And a well off one, so the streets are crowded with lots of vehicles. I love the Santa Cruz mindset, its political liberalism, love of diversity, and general freakiness, but there is a very good reason why so many cyclists from there come down to Watsonville to ride: It's safer here.
I have to say that I see a heck of a lot more hispanics walking or riding bikes than driving around Annapolis. They take the hardest work, lowest pay, longest hour, work around. I would love to count them among my friends, but I suspect they are working so hard they have little time to socialize, especially with outsiders. The biggest problem is that I see so many riding in the dark without lights, presumably to or from work. I have to agree with Stinger that they would much more likely be aware of cyclists than the typical resident of our area.

Huh. That's funny. I hadn't heard that there were a lot of people from Spain coming to the States and not acquiring citizenship, except for maybe Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz. No good Spanish aliens, coming to our country and stealing good acting jobs from Americans!
Well, you learn something nuevo cada dia, ?no?

The bottom line is that it just happened to be a dark skinned intoxicated person who murdered someone while driving drunk and then fled to try to sober up. There was a similar yet reversed instance in Long Island, I believe, of an uppity white real estate mogul who mowed down an illegal potato farmer while he was walking home. She told her garage mechanics that she'd hit a deer. She too was drunk driving and tried to cover it up. When people know they're going to prison for a looong time, it's only human nature to try to avoid it. Lesson to be learned, don't drink n' drive.

Plenty of drunk ass crackers out there, too, you know?
Always sad when a cyclist is killed. That happened not too long ago here in Norman. However, I will say that, at least in that instance, it was pretty much the rider's fault. No lights, at night, making a left turn in what the paper seemed to describe as an area where no left turn should be made. Nevertheless, any loss of life is tragic.

It is bigoted, racist is when you believe in the seperation of races. Alcohol seems to be the key, not who you are or where you come from. Of course any one that has no problem drinking and driving would also have no problem hitting and running. Happens all the time it just usually does not kill someone on a bike.

This last week we had a cyclist killed under very similar circumstances. A hit-and-run, only in this case the motorist drove on with the bike wedged underneath the front-end of his pick-up truck. Alcohol consumption was apparently a factor here as well.
My wife is of course concerned for my safety and has begged me to use the bike trail on my commutes at least part of the time. I tell her that as long as I obey the rules of the road, I'm as safe as anyone who must share it with those who refuse to exercise good judgment.
Needless to say, this wasn't quite what she wanted to hear.
