Well, went out after the rain last night and decided to see how well I could do doing a 3.75 mile loop until I had 15 miles. The loop has one hill and two 90 degree right turns to negotiate that slow you down. I also had to slow about 4 times for peds.

Did 15 miles in 1:01. I know that's slow to alot of you but it feels great to me. It seems like since going off the cholesterol meds my legs are making a coming back.

For a comeback that is fine. One hours riding would not have got the legs warm so 2 hours next week?

As you found out- bends and hills slow you down so when the flatlanders talk about 20mph average- you are up there with them. On thing is the flatlanders will not be up there with you. If they get 20 ft above their starting point- they get dizzy.

There's a lot of folks that would love to cover 15 miles in an hour.........just last weekend it took me almost that long just to do 3 miles!!!

Remember, it's not about doing better than others. It's about doing your (own) best. Oh wait -- you called the thread New Personal Best. You get it.

Congrats, Tim! As others have said, the only other times that matter are your own previous times.

15 in an hour is amazing. That would motivate you to probably go for 30 next time and in less than 2 hours.

Good for you sir, and that is not slow for me.

Fine. Did you pass someone? A fat old guy in lycra riding a full carbon fiber bike? Do you laugh at him and crush his spirit? Did you inflict mental cruelty and suffering on some hapless poseur?

Personal bests mean nothing if it doesn't involve humilating the competition, even if the competition doesn't even know you were competing with them.

At least that's what the Turks say over on the Roadie forum.

Not only did I drop him, I was riding my old low tech, stem shifter bike, just to rub it in. Actually, at one point I was cruising along at about 18mph and was severly dropped by a guy on a Cannondale. He was going so fast I didn't have enough time to see which model it was. I think he was on something, Flintstones probably.

But I wasn't on a 80% grade after 300 miles:)

As a mature rider that lives in a culture hell bent on telling me that I'm in decline, I admire you for your efforts. Improvements are not only for the young. We can continue to challenge ourselves (regardless of our current fitness) to do better. You have done this, and shared it in the appropriate forum. As my great grandmother used to say, "It's your life. Go live it."

I like that. Your grandmother sounds nice.

Mine used to tell me stuff like "Shut the door you stupid little twerp! I'm not paying to refridgerate the whole stinking neighborhood. Were you raised in a barn? And clean up that mess. Didn't your mother teach you better than that? When's the last time you had a bath? Why is there water coming out from under the bathroom door and why does it smell so bad?"

That's what I really loved about her.

It was actually my great grandmother. She was 78 the year I was born and live to be 102. At 95 she was still climbing step ladders to hang curtains and baking cookies on a coal fired stove. The entire time I knew her she was "old". She's probably the biggest reason I've never been too concerned about aging.

Congratulations! I certainly don't think 15 in an hour is slow.

I could beat 15 miles in 1:01 if it were all downhill.

Well, I think I could anyway.

One thing I like about you, TWL, is that you catch on to the important details of bicycling so quickly!

I especially enjoy beating the crap out of folks on cruisers who don't know I am racing them. Now, that is REAL fun, and makes me a REAL "SERIOUS" bicyclist.

And, HH. good stuff on the 15 miles. I did 33 miles today, but it took me a lot longer than 2 hours, as I was playing "tourist."
