"After 200 years as a military sentry watching over New York Harbor, Governors Island opened to the public for the first time in 2004. On Saturday (6/2/07), the historic island marks another milestone in the transition from military to recreation -- bicycles will be welcome ashore for the first time."

"Ferry service operates on Saturdays and Sundays, and leave from the Battery Maritime Building, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry Building in lower Manhattan. Visitors can walk their bikes aboard the ferry."

I took a walking tour around the island a few years ago. It's like an abandoned 19th century town. Very picturesque.

Holy Frijoles! Must go.

But are you required to do the tour? As in, does this just mean you can take your bike on the ferry, or can you ride around freely?

Edit: Sorta. ;)

"Bicycling is permitted in designated areas. Free bicycle maps are available on the island."
