Nate, why do you think these questions are irrelevant?
What is the city, name of the street, nearest cross street, and direction you are traveling?
Is the outside lane wide enough to be safely shared (you can be passed by cars by at least 3' without requiring them to encroach in the adjacent lane)?
Is onstreet parking allowed? How frequent are midblock intersections with driveways, etc.?
I think it is irrelevant when someone posts a response and you won't believe it until you get the whole "police report"
If one person feels a certain situation is not safe for them to ride in a certain method, then for crying out loud, take their work for it - but oh well, it'll never happen. Carry on
I don't feel the need to tell you the road name that I rode on and claimed was un-VC-able and I won't - so why should anyone?

+1 the "actual" roadway is irrelevant because of all the individual difference's in riding comfort. Where I don't get nervous until a car has broken the six inch barrier , some people are already experiencing the screaming mimmies and rightfully so. Adapting to the the situation and how it meshes with your particular skill level and the vibe you get from the surrounds dictate what happens..... not the tale of the tape. I'm not always comfortable having them so close, and will adjust accordingly. The third degree of the layout only serves to illustrate how restrictive applying VC seems to be.

I believe a certain situation feels unsafe for you to ride there vehicularly.
That does not mean that situation is unsafe for vehicular cycling or that there is a better approach.
I don't expect anyone to take my word for anything. Do you expect me or anyone else to take your word for something?

why would we take your word for it, part timer?
you don't ride everyday nor transportationally, and use the peloton and your daughter on a trail-a-bike to keep the weekend motorists at bay.

I have no idea why you would take anyone's word for anything about anything that is a matter of concern for your personal safety. I certainly don't, and I certainly don't expect anyone to take my word for anything in that context.

Well I'll give a rare but significant one.
Years ago, about this time of year I went out for my evening ride. durring my commute home the roads (surface streets) were unusually crowded (the worst I've ever seen in 30 years). But tht was 5, at 7 or so I went out for my ride. I started on back streets, until I got to a semi- major street. Only 1 lane each way, but a major commuting 'shortcut'. It was crowded but OK. But after a couple of miles it widened to 2 lanes each way. At that point it was like being at a LeMans start to a car race. I went one more block and bailed. I ended up using every back route I knew to stay off the main roads. In residential mazes there were cars going over 50.
Turned out ther had been a fatality accident involving a CHP officer on the freeway just before rush hour and they closed the freeway for several hours.
If that happens it isn't safe to drive, let alone ride. The smart and safe thing is to get where it is hard to hit you.

If I said, hey, HH, is there a road that requires more concentration to ride then others? and you told me the road, then YES I would take your word for it - just like me telling you a road here is insane to ride and is not safe to be ridden in the lane. Until you come here and ride it you have no choice but to take someones word for it. Too bad mine isn't good enough :(

I believe a certain situation feels unsafe for you to ride there vehicularly.
And yet your opinion on road riding stands for others, yet anyone who doesn't agree with you only speaks for their self?
How the hell can you post a thread about subjective situations and then say that?
