View Full Version : Saturday PV Ride for Losers

Happytime

For those of you in or near the South Bay and cannot ride at GMR or the Sierras, I'm doing a sad, lonely ride in Palos Verdes early Saturday morning. I'll depart my place in Torrance at dawn-ish, which means I'll pass through Malaga Cove between 6-6:30am.

I'm doing my version of the PV Loop (30 miles, 3300 ft)
Happytime's PV route (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Longer-harder-PV-Loop)
and if I have time, follow it up with a flat ride to MDR and back. (another 30 miles).

PM me if you want to join up... but if you don't, please do not throw things at the Bike Chick With No Friends. :o

You really should ride with my uncle who lives in Torrance. He loves riding at the crack of dawn and doing plenty of miles before the sun even starts to warm the earth. I guess I'll get that way when I have a family and more responsibilities.

btw if I don't stay out too late tonight, I might actually join you (I'll pm you for directions in that case), but otherwise I plan on "sleeping in" until 6:30 and doing my local club ride.

Temps a little too warm up there, John?

Don't worry, PV will still be here when you get back! :)

I'm going to be in PV (we used to call it The Hill when I lived up there) tomorrow but definitely not at that time of day.

There will be a street fair near the Peninsula Center and I'll be there with my parents later in the morning.

Have fun on your ride!

Happytime - I need to do that route to work on my climbing. Is the Hawthorne Blvd segment near the beginning of the route (down) or the end of the route (up)?

Ganado is a good hilly street... you'll be going by my old high school - Miraleste - off of PV Drive East.

Steve, I go down Hawthorne, as I prefer to use twisty roads like Via del Monte, Via Coronel or Zumaya/Castillo for climbing. I actually prefer those three to PVE because the roads are wider, smoother and there is hardly any traffic at all. Plus I can avoid the donut guys on Saturdays.

EDIT: Oh, and on descents, those roads don't have those pesky reflectors embedded in the asphalt!

Sigh. You are not a La-hoo-ser. And if I wasn't doing that other little ride, I'd come join you. I personally wouldn't mind trying one of your early morning workouts to get my ride in and have more of the day to play with.

My coach's instructions for tomorrow:
So work on the climbing stuff we talked about the other day; 1-2 minute surges followed by a nice and easy recovery period (heart rate down to at least 130) and then repeat 5-10 times depending on the length of the climb. Remember, when your performing a surge you should shift up a gear (harder) for the surge then shift down a gear or two (easier) for the recovery. Speed is not the objective in either the surge or the recovery, it's all about heart rate. The surge should start off slow and build over the surge to a max just as the surge is over.

My probable response:
"Doh de doh...pedal pedal... de dum dum...climb climb climb... dumb peacock get out of the road... da de dah... ooohh, cute roadie going by...pedal pedal... lah lah de dah... mmmm Starbucks..."

Maybe I'll organize a SoCal BF-PV ride in the future. It'll probbaly be on a Sunday. The donut guys and a lot of other cyclists take up the narrow roads on Saturdays.

That's just coachspeak for "Climb till you drop!" Clearly you need to come on the Mt. Baldy ride.

Good point. I used to have a No Fear t-shirt that said "2nd place is the 1st loser". I rarely came in 1st place when I had that shirt. We should be like the Fockers. "I didn't know they gave ribbons for 9th place"

I'm a loser cuz I leave at dawn o'clock and subsequently have no one to ride with.

On a positive note, I do not own fourteen cats.

Well gee, if you left a little later you'd have people to ride with. If I end up joining you, I think I'll have to wake up at 4 to meet up with you. I griped to my uncle when he made me meet him at 7am closer to my house, because I had to dress for a blizzard for that winter ride.

No wonder you like to ride on Sundays so often. I would have to skip church. God wouldn't mind, but my wife might.

I don't have a problem with the time, most of my buddies are "oh its too early" weenies.

Tomorrow won't work. I'm riding early on Sunday though. Hey its almost light at 5:30am, the drunks are all home asleep and the Starbucks drivers haven't gotten out of bed yet.:D

Happytime,

hey I'd ride with you. PV drive east, right out my front door. Ok, so it's Arlington where I live, same street.

Early or late I'm always riding solo through there.

The "I'd" part is I can't. not on Saturdays. I work 6-3:30. Every stinking Saturday. Unless I'm, cough cough, sick!!

I didn't think losers lived in So Cal!!!

Happytime, I'm planning on being out on PV tomorrow AM -- tomorrow happens to be one day that I'm hooking up with another friend and were not going to be pulling through Malaga Cove until probably 6:45ish. I'll be looking for a large group (or solo bike chick as you put it) out early tomorrow.

I have to admit I like the looks of your route, I'll have to give it a go sometime.

Hope you have a great ride.

Jeff

Ended up doing repeats of del Monte/Coronel/Zumaya instead of going to PV East.

Who was the guy who yelled, "Hey, Happytime!" while climbing up Altamira?
I was descending so I didn't get a chance to return the greeting.

Hill repeats what fun. Ended up going a bit later than 6:45 with my friend (who is just getting back into riding). Was fun, but hill repeats would have been funner!

I was not the one who spotted you out on the bike by the way.

Have a Great Day.

"Doh de doh...pedal pedal... de dum dum...climb climb climb... dumb peacock get out of the road... da de dah... ooohh, cute roadie going by...pedal pedal... lah lah de dah... mmmm Starbucks..."

That is exactly how I would describe the PV ride. That covered it all! Peacock's, Cute Rodies, and Starbucks!

Don't ride down there often any longer simply because there are so many stop lights and stop signs that its either 45 blown stop signs or starting and stopping every few feet.

To funny!
