I will be leaving dallas in a month or so to bike across the country, I was woundering if people could give me info on bikes, riding equipment and things to help prepare me for this adventure. This will be my first really long bike ride since I was 18 so not really sure on what to do.

First of all, this is the Long-Distance Cycling sub-forum, which generally apllies to long, shorter time period rides, such as centuries and brevets. There is a touring sub-forum that might be more applicable for your questions. I can understand where the confusion might enter in, however.

But first let me tell you that from what you've posted, I strongly discourage you from attempting this trip in a month's time. I'm inferring a lot here, but most people who ride cross-country, especially if it is solo, prepare for years, working up their confidence and physical/mechanical abilites with progressively longer rides and tours. I cannot emphasize how masive this undertaking is. Ask anyone who has done it.

One month is no time to prepare.

At this point, you should be pretty much set in your itinerary, have almost all your gear, be in good physical shape, etcetera. Again, I'm inferring, but from the broad nature of your post, it sounds as though you have done very little of this. I don't want to come off as a jerk, I'm just going for a reality check.

EDIT: I completely forgot the possiblity that this is a supported tour, like in the thred that the above poster linked to. If tha is the case, this is more realistic. Either way, you didn't provide very much (any) detailed information.
