Foo - Internet grudges

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Why do we let it happen?
People may get offended by what others say in threads, but that is their opinion. They are entitled to what they feel, think or believe in. Just because their reasoning for such beliefs doesn't match with someone else's doesn't mean they have to be treated unfairly. It can go both ways.
All I'm saying is that the past few days I have seen a few disagreements that really have turned into grudges that result in hurt feelings. (Especially mine, even though I wasn't involved in them :( ). I can't stand to see people (my friends) get into this. I can see discussing a difference of opinion but when it comes to degrading someone that just isn't very nice. It continues on in various threads as if people are targeting each other.
I understand that there are some that have ulterior motives, such as to cause a "posse" of sorts to get others to dislike someone but that to me is unfair. I think that the people who do that are not secure with what their cause is and need verification from others that what they do or say is right. And what that does is put others into the middle of it.
The ignore feature might help in these instances so nothing is seen that can be hurtful and therefore, no retaliation is warranted.

I highly doubt these things are real. Of course, I have a great difficulty reading people and thier emotions.
Perhaps pixels do cause high blood pressure and anger? This place just helps me more than anything.
Like anything good, if you abuse it you could hurt yourself, I guess. Doubtful anyone could really hurt even your feelings on a computer (not sure---again I may be exceptional for reasons most of you understand).
I try not to abuse this place (my clubhouse) or overstep my boundaries, but sometimes I make mistakes. Then I correct them. I appreciate those that help me grow.
I hold no grudges in this place, it would ruin my experience. I wouldn't let anyone ruin anything good in my life.

What I meant is when I see my two friends argue and be mean to each other. That hurts to see them do that. Because inside I know that they are truly upset and I don't want either of them to be unhappy. Makes ME unhappy. :(

There's a couple people in ssfg that I have on ignore. I feel that the arguments and belittlement are best left to PM's rather than have them spill out into the forums. It ruins the experience for everyone.

I think it's funny when people derail a thread or PM me just to tell me how much they think I suck.

Internet grudges are usually a special blend of many different herbs and spices....oops that's KFC, I meant misunderstandings and dramaqueening.
Basic way to sum it up was done best by the fine comedic minds of the strip Penny Arcade:

Someone, somewhere had to take things way out of context or out of hand to stir crap up enough to get to the point of a grudge, so I feel the above image applies greatly :)

Ya know, I never have given the thought to PM's being used to tell someone how much they suck. It just never occured to me to use the PM's in such a way. I try to use my PM's for telling someone how much I agree with their point or finding out a little more info on any certain subject. If someone has to PM someone else because they suck, what does that say for their character? I have always tried to avoid any 'no holds barred' grudge matches on BF's. Not the place in my opinion, even though most of my posts are on P&R.

I've been dissed, shot down, and downright insulted by some posters - and it goes a long way toward the entertainment value of this forum. People who hold internet grudges would be better served to vent on the telemarketers who call at dinner-time.

Yes AP, the way I've seen you handle it is admirable. Me personally, it's hard for someone online to hurt my feelings, but I do get annoyed every once in awhile. For me to hold a grudge, you have to have done something terrible to me, or to someone special to me. I don't really even have a grudge against Pete even, he's just being himself, I just happen to not agree or mesh with him at all.

I must admit that I've used a PM to ask someone why they had a problem with me. I felt that they were criticizing me for not being able to protect myself when I was mugged. They asked me what I could have done to protect myself when I was tapped on the shoulder and then punched in the face as I turned around.
We PM'd back and forth, telling each other off. Somehow through all of this we ended up talking nicely to each other.
Currently we are good buddies and spend a lot of time together. :)

Hey Siu,
I guess we all say something we shouldn't from time to time. Maybe it's the glass of wine we've had, or just bringing an attitude because of something else. We can geeet aloooong, it's just part of being a community, we're all a bit imperfect.

I don't anything I read here as any real grudge. The closest would be overspill from whatever forums the more jeuvenile hang out in, and that's still just petty sniping.
Nobody here bothers me enough to hold any grudge against them. And I think in reality that's the same for most and any sparring here is just for sh!ts and giggles.

Interesting discussion. Aside from a couple of people over in P&R, I really have had very little problems. One of the ones (perhaps both) are banned so I don't think it was me. ;) One thought that came to me about 34 years ago (gag - I am OLD!) was that the majority of people aren't thinking about me - perhaps NO ONE is thinking about me. So, if someone says something I could take wrong, I try to figure out a way to take it without being upset. Even if they are trying to be personal, I don't have to take it that way. After all, they probably aren't think about me, just having a bad day - or perhaps are creeps.
Really, it rarely has anything to do with me at all, so no point getting my tail in a knot over it.
However, I would like to say that if someone does have a problem with me - some of my workers would like to talk with you... ;)

Seriously, I haven't had any issues with any members here . . . yet.
I like a good debate/argument as much as the next person (though I haven't done much of it here), but there's no point in taking it beyond the immediate discussion. I've already got enough stuff to worry about in life and I don't need to get bent out of shape over what anonymous people write on the Internets.

Okay - time to be realitively serious. I think Foo is very different from the other areas of BF. Truthfully, we are just fooing around most of the time. I suspect when a newbie impacts the tomfoolery, well, sometimes they don't know how to take it.
I appreciate how people respect each other even though there is a lot of differences between us. This is more like a fruit salad than a single course...
Unfortunately Sui, you are more visible than I so people tend to spit their angst more at you than me - or perhaps they figure since I live in Costa Rica I must be at the least deranged.
