I dumped the car in the first week of June 2000. It was such a good move I feel stupid for not doing it years sooner. I think I used my daughter as an excuse to keep the thing parked out front. It wasn't really fair to blame a lame decision on a kid. It would have been cheaper to rent a car each time I drove her to a far away soccer tournament, thats all we used it for. It probably would have been more fun for her to ride in different new cars rather than the same old one. I remember years before I dumped the car when I was driving her somewhere and she remarked "You don't like driving do you?". I think I was still living in a TV advertisement fantasy world because I tried to say "Its the other drivers on the road who make it unpleasant." But she got me thinking, she was right. It hasn't much to do with other people on the road, it just isn't as fun as walking or biking. Now that she's all grown up she seems to value the walking and biking we did together.

I'm going on 5 or 6 years. It doesn't matter because life is so much better without all the overhead needed to fix motorcars. That's all I hear from people who have cars about all the money they have to spend in gas and repairs.

I've never owned one. But I had last had regular access to a car the summer of 1995. I just kept putting off the purchase of a car until it seemed like too much trouble to buy one.

Congratulations to gwd and all others. :)
And my sympathy to those who are still prisoners of the cage. :(
I haven't owned a car in 4 years, but I've been carfree for a total of about 20 years, off and on. I will be very surprised if I ever own another car!

While I occaisionally rent a car (or could) and have my license still, I have no interest in having one-even in Southern California. I prefer to bike, walk, or if I must use public transit. I never owned a car in all my adult life. Even my father cannot claim the same thing when he was alive. The only reason why I would buy a small car is for the sicker elderly members of my family. Not for my benefit.
