I'm a terrible report writer... but I will say this was a fabulous ride with great support and a gorgeous route. My Garmin showed the elevation gain on the 50 was 4910 vs. the 5400ft they had on the website... it didn't matter though, the climbing was pretty tough for me; much steeper than I'm used to.... lots of stuff between 9-14% and many places 14-21%... most were short but the initial climb up sheep ranch road was brutal :p By the time we got back, it was about 90 so I was glad I did the 50... not that the 100 was an option w/12k in elevation gain
Nice pics. 50 miles with 5,000 feet of gain? Nothing to be ashamed of. I'm just tired from riding 50 miles with one 600 foot climb.

okay, now that I downloaded it to motionbased... it shows 45 miles and 5372 in gain... it was harder than the ride last weekend.... the climbs were much steeper
... gonna attempt a century in two weeks

I think in some ways you may find it easier. Remember you will be doing 1/2 the climbing.

that's actually the only reason I am justifying attempting it... I'll be going into it w/61 miles as my longest training ride

I did Lodi with a longest training ride of 70 miles. I think you are more ready than you give yourself credit for. I will admit that the week before Lodi I was pretty nervous but when I did the ride I was very surprised at how relatively painless it was. I think you'll be fine.

Im already feeling the pain. With the fog I can decide what to wear. Arm and leg warmers, or the 2XU jacket. I dont expect it to be over 60 till we get back on this side of the hill.

Nice pics, Tracy. So it was tougher than Old La Honda or Tunitas Creek. At least last weekend's ride prepared you, somewhat, for Sierra. Was it hotter than last week?
We did Baldy here, and it was hot! Didn't climb that well, and not sure if it was due to heat, smog, or combination of both.
Oh, and the century, you can do it. You just need to pace yourself, and just concentrate on turning that crank.

Looks like a great ride. I think I will be in that area in late September. I would like to do that same 50-mile ride that you did. Can you give me some detailed route info? The website of the organizers gives some info but still not sure how to connect from Mountain Ranch back to Murphys. Thank you.

I did the 100 mile route (its actually 94 miles). The first 60 miles up to the 3rd rest stop was the toughest of the ride. By that time I pulled into the 3rd rest stop had climbed over 8000 feet. The hardest part of the ride was the road leading up to the 3rd rest stop. It is called Jesus Marie Road which is a long climb and pretty steep in some parts. Plus it was entirely exposed so you had the sun beating down on you. This is the most amount of climbing I've done on a century. I'm doing the Death Ride, so I used this as a training ride. This is the link to my ride:
Thanks Brian! Are ya getting ready for Giro de Peninsula? :p

WOW, I am so impressed! I was thinking about you guys doing the 100 when I was done... I was pretty darned tired and can't even imagine adding another bunch of climbing  ... although, I may do it next year ;)

I thought this ride was harder than what we did last weekend as there were a lot more steep sections (and its at a higher altitude). I had trouble at the end keeping up the pace due to the heat so I definately know whatcha mean about that putting a crimp in the climbing ability ;) Wayne didn't think it was any harder than last week's ride but the initial climb was really long and tough for me...
Great job on Baldy btw :p

hehehe, of course.. Well I still am doing my normal commuting but have not really tackled anything since Memorial Day. I look forward to the ride and hope to start some light week night training on our fixed bike int he garage. I bought this thing 2 years ago and have not put hardly anytime on it. I hope to develop some meat on my chicken legs to help my riding outside..

I bought 2 carbon roadies last night, I woke up this morning smiling as I was walking into the garage to wax them with my drool and to check them out and they were not there. Bad Dream!
I am pretty confident I eventually will be buying a roadie, in all honesty it will probably be next year, 08'. Right now I am just going to focus on my commuter and try my best to do all I can on it, I just bought the bike. I really want to make positively sure this hobby/ lifestyle is for me and to adjust in a small budget in my monthly savings for my future bike.
She really is supporrtive of my new riding adventures and she took me out riding today.

After talking to one rider who did Sierra last year, I am not surprised. He said there were some pretty steep climbs. Heat definitely is a factor when you are trying to climb a f#%#@ hill.
Great job on Baldy btw :p
Thanks. It was tough, as the sun was beating down on us, and there was no shade ... the sun was relentless.

Actually I ride both bikes pretty equally... on the hilly stuff, I've been riding the Roubaix but on anything flat or medium, I've been riding the LOOK... I really still love both bikes...
Tomorrow will be my maiden voyage on the tandem.... should be interesting :p

Wow, this will be a first. My good friend Lynn, who is the maniac doing Paris-Brest-Paris, always tells me about her tandem riding experiences. If the captain grinds it out, so will the stoker ... captain riding fast cadence, so will the stoker ... I think you get my drift.

I think we'll be able to work together pretty well.... the fact that he is an excellent ride leader helps because he's used to calling things out... something that is apparently very important on the tandem :p
