Whew!!! I am now back from my 6500 mile car ride across America. Please, don't ever let me do that again. The entire trip I cringed everytime we approached a big city or had to sit for interstate construction. Now, this got me thinking about my own personal car usage. I do not own a car, but do drive my girlfriends' every once in a while. The issue here is that I would really like to stop driving entirely, and I have brought this up with the girlfriend. I do not enjoy driving and hate even more sitting in a car as a passenger. So, I see no reason I should have to take part in the driving culture. I live close to everything I need, so driving is not necessary. But....the GF is very fond of the automobile. She loves road trips, and just general driving. She has cut down on her driving since we met two years ago, but she still has a ways to go. So, my question is...how strong of a stance should I take when it comes to not ever wanting to be in a car again (or at least on a very limited basis)?

My approach is, live and let live. I have my way of getting around, and I stick to what I like. I also have my opinions, which have gotten me in trouble sometimes. But you have to do what you think is best for you, allowing others to do their own thing.
There is no way to change anyone, other than living your own life as an example. Let others make their own choices. In the end, wisdom is justified by her children.
Relationships are tricky, too. Learn when to leave others to their own ways. :D

Pete is right. I've given up on trying to make others see my point of view. I mean, I'll express an opinion (as you all know), but you can't force someone to do something they really don't want to do, so don't push it.

Personally I too would like to be carless, but it involves too many obstacles, one of which is how would I transport my family? Although I love bikes it doesn't follow that I hate cars, for after all if it weren't for the popularity of autos there would not be the road system like we enjoy now.
