Hi Everyone,
My name is Sally and I hope to be a bike owner/rider very soon. My plan is to buy a bike and use it to commute to work. I live in Manhattan so I'm trying to figure out the best bike to buy. For storage and non-theft purposes, I'd really like to get a foldable bike (I have a small NY city apartment so it would work best for storage) but also, I'm very nervous about leaving it chained up outside for 8 hours a day. If anyone has strong feelings (positive or negative) about folding bikes...I'm really interested to hear them. Basically, I'm going to commute 2 miles each way to and from work. I would also be using the bike for riding in the city (paved roads) and don't anticipate taking this bike outside the city for heavy duty biking...if I want to do that, I'll rent. So- any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Sally, wecome to the forum, I feel folding bikes have their place, A 2 mile commute will be great on one, and you can fold it and take it inside. If you buy a better one, they hold up as does a regular bike they just aren't as efficient on the road. Good luck, do it, it's a great thing to do.

After I posted initially what I meant to do was edit my post so my location was in the topic (which the hope that New Yorkers on the forum might see it and chime in with some city saavy advice for me)

Mrfix - thanks for the advice. I'm having this internal debate between full size bike (and full size functionality) and risk it being stolen versus foldable bike with limited functionality but I don't have to leave it outside. I may start out with the foldable bike. If I later decide that I'm really interested in much more intense rides- then I'll just have to bigger badder bike!
