Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Lesson learned. Kayaking can hurt a lot. I took a spill and had to crawl my way out of the water. Cuts, bruising and abrasions (not to menion ego) all took a hit.

1 week later more pain than I have felt in years and a doctors appointment = bad infection, T3's and IV Anti biotic drip, oh and 5 days off my feet (part of the infection is in my left foot rendering it unmovable)...doctor even cracked a joke. Well 2

2 more days and it would have hit my respitory system (it was funnier at the time)

or

50 years ago, if I had been stupid enough to let the infection go as long as I did, my leg would been removed.

Sooooo...I will likely be on here a lot in the next 5 days :)

Mael - thank goodness you got to the doc when you did. Heal up dude and the bikes will be there when you're ready to get back on them (not to mention the other toys). I know what it's like to be on R&R for recovery, it's no fun but will end. Glad you didn't wait any longer. Once it's in the lungs it's a whole basket of trouble.

Time for a sea kayak, Mael. Rivers are dangerous.
And heal well, sorry man.

Hate to be abrupt, but really what the hell did you do?

Thats a total bummer man, sorry to hear that. Bad infections always suck totally! I had a pretty bad staph infection in my knee 4 years ago. It was so bad if i even made the slightest move in my legs my whole body would shriek in pain. Rest up dude! Hope everything works out

I was Kayaking a narrow river to get to one of our big lakes. Got caught up in a VERY light current and got stuck in a tree. Here is my pure stupidity. I didn't have a skirt. Kayak filled up and I dumped in freezing water. By the time I was able to crawl out I had worked my way over a lot of fallen trees, which is how I got caught up. I was able to warm up and continue the trek. 2.5 hours later is was an awesome kayak ride, but obviously, some bug had gotten in and started to work its magic.

Right now my mouth tastes like ass and I am not allowed off of the sofa until the swelling goes down.

Thanks guys

I once jammed a stick up a couple of inches between the toes on my left foot while I was out of my boat. Actually, I was running into the river to try to flag my wife down who had the car keys as I had just bummed a ride back up river. The stick broke off in my foot so it couldn't be seen and I thought I had just broken a toe. Later that night I was in the ER with a foot that had ballooned up, a fever and a nice surgical procedure to remove the wood.

I was supposed to leave a day later for a 2 week paddling trip to Colorado but the orthopod wanted to start IV antibiotics. He let me off the hook cause my wife is a doc and promised to monitor the situation while I took oral antibiotics. So I drove across Kansas with my left foot up on the dash to keep it elevated and took the first few days off the river while the group paddled. I used a goretex sock to help keep it dry and wound up having a great trip. I was lucky for sure.

Yow! Hope you get better soon, Mael. When I saw your post over in the MTB forum, I had visions of you upside down, bummping your head along the bottom.

What's in that water up there?

Next time try to kayak in a nice river and not a cess pool. What is up with all the infections after kayaking????

Can't get much cleaner than glacier water ;)...every body of water has a chance to create staff infections.

The infection was likely caused by the 2 hour kayak afterwards (no cleaning) or working for a week with socks on rubbing the crap out of the wound

Should be riding in the next week or so. Been a slow start for sure.

Ouch - sorry to hear that! I do prefer the whole sea kayak - though night river kayaking is awesome!

Beaver fever through a leg wound? Did you possibly drink some of that fresh glacier water while bouncing your head on the bottom?
