Bicycle Mechanics - What size seat post quick release clamp?

Hi all

Not sure if the terminology is correct but here goes. I want to replace my existing seatpost clamp with a quick release model as I have replaced the standard bike kit with a new post and saddle which are a bit pricier than the original. By bike is a Ridgeback Meteor with a 27.2 seatpost. I just phoned my LBS and asked them what size clamp I needed and after first telling me 27.2 they then went away, came back and said... 34 mm. Only problem is I can't find an clamps in this size. Are they mad or am I not looking properly. The Ridgeback site isn't much help I'm afraid. Any advice much

You need a 31.8mm version, it's a standard size for alu frames with
27.2mm diameter seat posts so it should be easy to find one.

I took mine off and put in a 6mm bolt to prevent theft. Are you SURE you want a QR?

you shouldn't expect any LBS to know off the top of their head what size seatpost collar goes on some random frame based solely on the size of the seatpost. different manufacturers tend to use different sized tubing for their seat tubes, making it really difficult for someone to tell you what size collar you need over the phone, based on the seat post size. measure the diameter of the tube that the collar is supposed to fit on, not the diameter of the post that goes inside the tube that the collar is supposed to fit on.

1TS - The LBS sold me the bike. They were looking at the same model when they told me the incorrect size on the phone. I go to LBS's instead of sheds because I expect a level of knowledge.

I bought the Pithead set recently. Works great on wheels but not on the seatpost. So in London where bike theft is endemic (and parts theft too) the only way I'll keep my post and saddle longterm is to remove it. These guys are fast and nasty over here! So a QR is easier than useing a hex key every time.
