Hi everyone,

I'm new to both the forums, and as the name suggests, San Jose. I'm an east coast grad-student working in San Jose for the summer. My mountain bike just got in, and I purchased a road bike because the area seemed perfect, but I haven't found anyone to ride with yet. Are there any groups on here that do rides in the San Jose area? Want another rider? I'd say I'm at least an intermediate level single-tracker, however I've got less than 30 miles on my new road bike. I don't have a car, so driving my bike out to places isn't really an option.

Looking forward to some responses,
-Jeremy

Hi, and welcome!
Check out the schedule for the Almaden Cycle Touring Club (ACTC), which is based in San Jose. They offer a wide variety of road rides, grouped into "Grizzly Bear" (flat road), "Billy Goat" (hilly road) and "Mountain Goat" (mountain bike) rides, with varying speeds and levels of difficulty.

Here's the club home page

And here's the ride schedule page, with a description of the different ride levels:

There are monthly NorCal group rides discussed on this message board. These are all over the bay and Sacramento areas, so you would have to work something out with another rider for transportation. I am a bicycle commuter and new road biker in the Willow Glen area (just south of downtown and I-280) and I sometimes do training rides starting from home on weekends. This weekend I'll be in Patterson doing my first century but we may be able to get together on another weekend, I'll message you if I have something coming up.

There are a couple nice bike paths starting in San Jose. There are lots of beautiful roads in the coastal mountains but they are quite a ride to get to from San Jose. I haven't explored this option, but you can get closer taking you your bike on the bus or ACE train.

I commute on my bike from SJ.

Where in SJ do you stay/work?

If you want to ride in the peninsula area, there are two clubs ... Western Wheelers (http://www.westernwheelers.org), which is more social, and Alto Velo (http://www.altovelo.org), which is a little more aggressive.

I am thinking of joining either Western Wheelers in Palo Alto or Almaden Cycle Touring Club (ACTC) in San Jose. Anyone know if their group ride locations are all that different?

I'm live on Minnesota Avenue near Lincoln (just a couple blocks from downtown Willow Glen if you know that area). I work at nVidia near Central and San Tomas Expressways, about a 7.3mi commute.

Typically, WW starts at Gunn High School in Palo Alto. The one thing about WW is that they always start very late in the morning, around 10 am. Plus, the time they actually roll is 15 minutes later. So if it states 10 am, they normally don't roll till about 10:15 am.

C rides are the most popular. They also stop off for lunch, but it can be time consuming. The gripe I have with C rides is they stop too long ... about 1 to 1.5 hours for lunch. Very painful to get started again.

D rides are for stronger and faster riders, but I like them because if there is a lunch stop, we typically stop for no more than 15 minutes.

As you can tell, I ride with WW quite a bit.

I'm both living, and working, in downtown San Jose. I visited the Willow Glen bike shop this weekend (about a mile away from me) for parts, and asked about group rides. While they don't organize anything, they did tell me of what's supposed to be some pretty good mountain biking and road biking in the area. I'm currently recovering from yesterdays leg workout, but if any of those in the area are available, I'd definitely like to do a ride later this week.

Just a bump to this thread, and...

Does anyone want to ride this weekend? I'd love to do a group ride, but have no way to/from any of the rides in the area. :)

I am riding on Sunday. If you'd like to join us you are welcome too. It does include a bit of climbing as the route is about 34 miles and has 4500ft of climbing. I can pick you up if you wanna join us.

I'm doing my century this weekend, but I'd be interested another Saturday (I have soccer games Sunday).

Sean, I'd love to do the ride on Sunday -- the climbing shouldn't be a problem. I'll e-mail or private message you my address/phone #.
