I got an issue of "Outside" magazine on Saturday. Not sure why it came to me, or how they got my name in the first place, but that is beside the point.

I like to read before I go to sleep, so I got in bed and flipped this rag open. I got halfway through it before I realized that I hadn't really read anything yet. THE DAMN THING IS ALL ADVERTISEMENT!

I set about counting this morning and here are the stats from this "magazine".

Total Pages: 147

Total pages of/with ads: 117

Breakdown:

Double page ads: 12 (for 24 pages)

Single page ads: 65

Fold open junk: 1 fold open thing = 4 pages

Oakley ad: 1 ad - 24 PAGES.

GARBAGE!!!!

Yeah, if that flips you out, don't open any women's magazine. Vogue could kill you.

Yeah, if that flips you out, don't open any women's magazine. Vogue could kill you.Jesus, no kidding. Five hundred pages long, with a grand total of three "articles," while the rest consists of obnoxious, pointless full-page ads.

Oh look, all of these sweaty, emaciated, freakishly pale, dead-eyed people are laying about the room, completely strung out on heroin and who knows what else! Suddenly I want to buy anything with the word "Gucci" emblazoned across it!

That is what I hate about most magazines...too many ads.

How about ofering content and making more money based on better readership? Oh wait, quality is not the buzzword profit method of the week, it's instead pushing out drivel and convincing people to pay for it....then to even make the articles advertisements in disguise...never talking about the bad of a product, only the good.

Really, most magazines are utter garbage to me. I picked up some guitar mags, and their only saving grace is the tabulature in the back, and that some of the "small print" ads are of actual products I might care to try....which is ironic, since all those giant splashy ads for Specialized (bicycling mag), PRS (guitar world), Klipsch (some audio mag I bought a while back), or any other big-label company in any hobby I am interested in will probably never see my business (I'm too particular for most big labels to fill my needs, and for other items I just refuse to pay that much for one).

I don't mind some of the ads in Hustler since they advertise more nekkid women. :D

Cypress, That's typical of Outside now. Read long enough and you'll notice that the only outdoor sports that exist are skiing/snowboarding, surfing, climbing, running, kayaking and cycling. The articles they have aren't too bad, but after about 5 years, I think I may let my subscription lapse the next time it comes up.

I'm just glad I didn't pay for it.

Could it be from my racing license? Did USAC sell my name to these fools or what?

weird. i starting getting outside magazine as well. i've now recieved two free issues. i never paid for it, and nobody bought it for me as a present. i'm totally baffled on why i'm getting them.

i also started getting a new road bike mag called road bike action for apparently no reason.

I get it as well. Figured i was the only one. Except i've hardly ever opened it. It seems kind of odd that a bunch of BF members are getting this magazine without subscribing. Is the whole world getting it?

Cypress, the reason you are getting it for free is that advertizing is what pays for the magazines, not the readers. Think of it as consolidated junk mail - makes it easier for throwing it all out all at once.

When I get unsolicited magazines with my name and address on them (ie. not just randomly delivered to "occupant") I usually contact them and ask them to remove me from their mailing list. This makes a huge difference.

The most insidious advertising in magazines is the current trade of writing extremely short "editorials" about products and passing it off as actual content when in fact it's just another paid ad thinly camouflaged as something it's not.

That's what well over half of the "real content" was!

The Stephen Colbert GQ was the funniest thing I have ever seen.

GQ "So what is your previous jobs"
SC "Well I used to be a male prostitute, but I was classy...in fact my street name was Butt Classy"

Haha Sorry, continue

I have to say outside has some good stuff, but as you mention it is mostly advertisements.

Yea, I get that stupid mag also. I just throw it out now. I'm into the outdoors and stuff, but that mag has nothing interesting in it.

Haven written them, I can tell you that some of the articles in magazines are written by the advertizers...

I` just started getting Outside mag too. I didn`t pay or get it for a gift either. I`m thinking Nashbar or Performance Bike might of passed my info. And the mag sucks! Lame articles and nothing interesting or special to me.
