i need to replace my helmet. I ride a road bike on a short commute. Does anyone know if the BMX helmets offer more protection? I assumed they would, but on the 2006 Consumer Reports it showed they didn't. Does that make sense?

Yes it makes sense; especially when considering how little "protection" (as in significant risk reduction) is afforded by either.

More protection than what?

More protection than regular (road) helmets. The mountain bike helmets look like cover the back of the head.

Does that make sense? The only helmets that have the Snell rating (which is a higher rating than the CPSC rating) are offroad helmets, specifically BMX helmets. Look for any helmet with the Snell sticker, and that will offer more protection than the helmets with the CPSC sticker.

Snell Standards (http://www.helmets.org/standard.htm#SNELL)

Snell Foundation (http://www.smf.org/) Follow this link to the Helmet certification lists, and you will have lists of helmets that are Snell certified.

Not sure what you mean by mountain helmets. Any mountain helmets I saw were exactly like road helmets with a plastic visor. The difference is marketing. Buy what fits.

Do you mean a skate helmet?

Probably more than paper bag or a knit cap when protecting against bruises or road rash.

Mountain bike helmets aren't any better than road helmets. They are pretty much all the same. Most important is that it fits you well.

I wear a skate helmet. More coverage, more protection.
