Northeast - Recommend me a NYC bike shop for...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Apologies in advance for yet another "NYC Bike Shop" thread...

I'm anxiously awaiting delivery on a new BMC Team Machine (http://www.bmc-racing.com/uploads/tx_wsbikeshop/team_machine_SLT01_B_01.jpg) frame (time has never moved so freakin' slow), which I plan on fitting with parts from my current roadie...I don't have the tools to do it ALL, so I'm going to be lazy and take both bikes to a shop and have them do the complete transfer.

Pretty simple mechanical job, yes, but this thing is my baby - first new bike I've purchased in seven years - and I'm completely obsessing over it and (selfishly/foolishly) want a bike shop that will appear to be equally as obsessed with doing a 100% quality job.

Any recommendations/endorsements?

I had considered going to Sids...tho I did come across a very harsh review (http://www.yelp.com/biz/xypBR3eoLRkKaazb1hOteg)...the reviewer does commend their mechanics, which is the only thing I'm concerned about for this particular project, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

I have only browsed at Sid's, but I think I have to disagree with the review. I went in there looking at road bikes, and they had a decent range. Maybe a bit less of the entry-level road bikes than some other shops, but several options in the $1200 range or less (which was what I was looking at) and basically knew their stuff.

The staff can be a little detached, but not much more or less than every other bike shop I've been to (with one or two exceptions -- neither of which I would recommend for truly high-end stuff though). They're opening a 2nd store, which hardly makes them a chain. ;)

One anonymous Internet review is hardly authoritative, imo.

Anyway, another option is Bicycle Rennaisance. Friendly staff, full range of bikes, including some of the higher-end Orbeas.

I would also contact BMC and find out who are their NY are retailers / service shops.

Habitat, Sid's, Gotham in Manhattan & R & A in Brooklyn are all good.

I thought the wrenches at Sid's & Habitat were very good. I wouldn't roll in there on a Friday evening or Saturday expecting instance service, unless you're a regular and you've called ahead.

Intriguing. I really like the service aspect at Habitat, super friendly. I might even buy a bike from them one of these years. ;) But do not usually think of them as high-end wrenchers. I could be wrong though....

Hmmm. I wouldn't describe Habitat as high end wrenchers per se, but they take time & care with their repairs. If you're looking for high end wrenching specifically, I'd try Toga uptown.

Try Chelsea. My fave is the guys at Bike Works, but dunno how often they work on high end bikes.

Sids does deal with a lot of high end bikes and they enjoy working on them. I've never had a problem (except when it took a month to get tires but apparently that was Specialized, not them) and the mechanics have been good. This is a busy season though probably all over, so I wouldn't expect it in less than a week.
