right now I'm riding a HARO V1 with stock setup, and im currently building on a PEUGEOT Select frame I found in the dump at a construction site behind my apartment.

converting it (the PEUGEOT) to a 3 or 5 speed internal or external. I am still debating on what I want. The internal setup will allow for a coaster brake with a front shimano 105 or ultegra calipre with a huge 53 single dura ace crank and a single shifter. This makes for more of a heavier (because of the rear hub) and less affordable fixer. But mind you its a nice setup without all the fixings. The other setup is a dura ace 9 speed modified to either a 3 or 5 speed setup with a short cage deraileur for more tension and quicker shifting because of less gears, a 53 dura ace single crank and 105 or ultegra shifters / dual pivot calipers.

Haven't decided. the one with more pieces is ironically lighter.

The 2 setups are the way I want to go, but I haven't decided on which one I wanna go with. needless to say, I am picking up the dura ace crank for sure (cause it isn't exp on ebay, cause its the 2006 model but who cares???) and going with either 105 or ultegra shifters / brakes. but im not sure if I wanna go with bar ends or down tubes, cause this PEUGEOT has down tubes already, but i'm not a huge fan.

What gets me is that the wheels will be the heaviest thing and cost just about the same amount that ill put into the rest of the bike, not including time...

if you guys have a better setup to try please advise. cause with the internal gear hub i ws gonna go all SRAM components and that could be very very $$$

Much respect for the dumpster dive, but why did you post this in the 'cross forum?

I'm thinking the same thing myslef. Sounds interesting though. My suggestion is post this in the mechanics forum. You will get plenty of responses to a post like that. Good luck

reason why i posted in the cross forum is that I wanted to find out gearing options / ideas to better suit my riding style / needs. Also I wanted more of a low maintenance bike i could beat the $hit out of and not worry about.

I was curious to find out if anyone ran an internal gear setup on their cross bike and if so how durable is it for punishment?

Internal gear hubs are normally geared for commuter bikes, but some sch as the rohloff are said to be geared for mtb. but still makes me wonder how heavy of a beating the mtb models can go through.
